Old Ford box with a mystery tail

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by flatordead, Mar 8, 2004.

  1. Got that 40's Ford tranny lately. What makes Me a little curious is that U-joint housing. Have seen that kind of stuff in an old Ansen Catalog saying it fits Cyclone or Offenhauser boxes. Or is it just a boat (propeller shaft) conversion? Has modern style oilseal and a needle bearing inside for open drive shaft.
So what's that, where does it belong, who made that stuff?

  2. I built a similar setup like that years ago that would allow me to use a Chevy slip-joint torque tube behind a '39 Ford floor shift tranny. I re-splined the transmission's output shaft to accept the Chevy U-joint. I wish I hadn't given it all away.... [IMG]

It does look like early Chevy hardware. The only other torque tube hardware like that I have seen is aftermarket sprint car stuff, made of aluminum to go between a Ford-flange in and out box and a quickchange. If that stuff is steel, I'd say Chevy.

Yep, for a boat. Look at the way those rubber mounts would fit at the bottom.

  5. Thanks for the tips. I gonna check out an early chevy tube, see if it's the same. And yes those rubber mounts really cry "boat".
