@Dave Mc, did you look that store up? I grew up in Mustang, about 25 miles away. I was in that store a couple of times in '61-'62 on the way to basketball games in Binger. I was long gone from that part of the world when they filmed part of the movie "Rain Man" there.

Since being a gas station this building has been used to sell bowling balls and then a van customizing shop. Now it's just personal use. Fond du Lac, WI

Aladdin, Wyoming. Population 15 - or thereabouts according to the lady at this fabulous store. This store has been in operation over 130 years - since before Wyoming even became a state. The red gas pump is from the 1950s and still in operation.

Gas Stations of Red Oak II: Both of our historic Route 66 service stations are covered in a thick blanket of pure snow this morning, and are a real sight to see! The often photographed 1920s Phillips 66 "Tudor/Cottage-Style" (Type A?) structure is of course a real gem, but do not miss his sometimes overlooked older brother across the pond. The Standard Oil "crown" station was originally built in place from a pre-fabricated kit in nearby Carthage, MO, and predates WWI, making it one of the oldest remaining gas stations on the entirety of Route 66!

"Located in a restored 1920s garage and gas station, the Maker’s Son embodies the rustic nature of California’s Central Coast and pays homage to all the “makers” who have come before us to build and contribute to the special coast communities we call home."

    Hello,

On one of our “country” road trips, we drove by this old gas station in Los Alamos and decided that the next time we came up past Santa Barbara for more explorations, we would stop and dine at this historic gas station, not for gas, but for the ambience and experience the food.

Most folks take Highway 101 from Santa Barbara/Goleta area North to get headed to San Francisco or Monterey. The cut off for the Coastal Highway 135 that goes farther inland to the communities of Guadalupe and farther on, arrive at Pismo Beach.

Our dad took us to the city of Guadalupe to this old steakhouse on one of our early, family road trips. He knew the owner from way back in his history. So, being invited to the restaurant was a joy. We got to have the best grilled steak dinner, ever. My brother and I gobbled the steaks like they were jelly. The smoky flavor just hit the spot. And the side garnishes made it better, yet.

So, by the time my wife and I came up this way on our Coastal Highway 1, Big Sur drive beginnings, we stopped for a great steak dinner at the same place. But, three years later, on another drive South from San Luis Obispo through Pismo Beach, we arrived to see the restaurant closed. Aaawwww…

As we drove out of the small community, sad that the steak house was closed, we headed South to a just as nice a place called Mattei’s Tavern Restaurant in Los Olivos. Another great place to stop, rest and have a great meal at anytime of the day/night.

    Note:

In the old town of Los Olivos, near Solvang, the tavern used to be a stage coach stop over and so, it may have been considered a “gas station” for horses. YRMV

Currently, it has expanded and is now called “The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern,” a resort vacation location.

Did anyone ever post pictures in this discussion of the old Texaco station that Vernon Walker (of Walker Radiator) had? The story was apparently the building was originally put up in 1960, then taken apart after just a couple of years and then stored away in a warehouse somewhere. He bought and reassembled it on his home property in Tennessee.

This was my favorite era of gas stations, when I was a kid they were everywhere. The thing I remember as a little boy is they usually had a Coke cooler and a peanut vending machine in the office. :)

Meridian, OK early 1900s and a couple years ago. Only 14 residents call Meridian home now. Once, two railroads served this town. Miles Allen owned a variety of businesses here, and he pressed for the town to be named “Indian Meridian”. Allen Street pays homage to him. GasMerid.jpg
