Like all car guys, I've been one since as long as I can remember. Up until recently, I had been strictly into water-cooled VW's and then got tired of FWD and moved into older BMWs. Well, the older it seems the car, the happier I am driving it. I work part-time as a rural postal carrier, in which you have to drive your own car (from the right hand side). This made me go out and buy a 1979 AMC Dispatcher (Postal Jeep). I fucking hate Jeeps (sorry Jeepsters). So I found a RHD Subaru wagon to take care of work. This puts me where I am now and on this forum. My wife gave me the ok to trade off the Jeep for anything. So, I've been hawking Craigslist and harassing anyone with something that catches my eye. It's a long shot to find someone with a 50's coupe that likes postal Jeeps, so it's been slim pickins. So far, the best offer has been for this rough ass 1951 Packard (200/250?). And after seeing this, it has me in love: I know it'll be a shit ton of work to get it cleaned up that much. @#$% it! I'm at a point where anything is better than that shit stain Jeep. Here's some random photos of my other cars: BMW E21 VW Passat
Yes sir. I'm not a "King of chrome" kinda' guy. Honestly, I would probably go with a satin black body, gloss black everything that was chrome and put in a loud ass interior.
In other news: My shit pile Jeep is up and running tops. We messed around with it today and tightened some of the flex plate bolts and now the rattle of death has ceased and the little bastard purrs. So, I'm upping the price on it a little. Next I'll replaced all the damaged panels, sand it down, dump some POR15 on the rusty spots, primer black it and paint the wheels. Then finish ripping the smog pump crap out and clean up the engine bay. Should jump the price up a little more. Hopefully I should be able to get a little more than $3k out of it. That'll make for a good starter budget on a 50's coupe. Packard 200/250, Ford Shoebox, Pontiac 2dr, you'll see a trend.
Welcome to the HAMB! Your Packard is a great find. It's a 250 Mayfair hdtp coupe. The total production of 250s, which consisted of the hdtp cpe and convertibles, was 4,640. The hardtop came only in the 250 series, not 200, not 300, not Patrician 400. Very rare car.
So what you're telling my newbie ass, is that I should go down with the $500 he's asking for it and quietly tow it away?
Here's a little update: I didn't trade off the Jeep for the Packard. After seeing more detailed photos of it I realized it needed fabrication/restoration way out of my league. But, I did sell off the jeep freeing up some money. And, as it sits now, I'm picking this up on Sunday (unless the guy sells it out from underneath me). It's a 1953 V8 Buick Special.
Correction. Its an inline 8 not a v8. Today is the day. Im hitting the road for a 2 hour mini road trip to see it in person and hopefully drag it back home.
Well, she was as advertized and drove onto the trailer under her own power. Now she's home. Here's a video of my fumbling around with the carb and the camera. My three stooges. The Subaru is a RHD Legacy that I deliver the mail in, you know about the Buick. And, the BMW is a 1981 320i (E21) with a good chunk of work done to it. The guy tossed in a bunch of literature with the car.
