There are so many variables in the photographic and printing process that it is nigh on impossible for a printed picture in a magazine to accurately match a an actual paint colour, either in a can or on a car. Ink on paper changes colour over time too.

You cannot take a magazine picture to a paint shop and ask to put it in the analyzer and expect it to spit out the formula.

You have to use best gusesstimates and factor in a million variables including the lighting conditions, camera settings etc. when the shots were taken. Not to mention colour tweaking done when the separations were done for the printing process.

I don't think he is trying to match the exact colour from the magazine but the overall look (frame and body matching colour) from the magazine

I don't mean to match the magazine as a paint chip. I mean I don't want to paint it black or another color only for the reason that I'd like it to match the magazine for display reasons.

To the OP. Those cans of paint are cool but sounds like no one knows if it is really left over from your car. The builder might of thought they were but...
I wouldn't get to hung up wanting to use it. I'd proceed on with the restoration how ever you would if you didn't have the paint. I'm confused though, you need to repaint the whole car but you already had a guy paint it Ford red?
If you do repaint the whole car, do you plan on doing it in lacquer?

I have no idea. I don't know anything about paint. I got screwed on the paint job I traded a mustang for.

Yeah originally when the guy painted the car and outer frame, ford red matched. So now the new paint that is chipping away matches exactly to the under side of the car "old paint". After reading all these helpful responses, I'm pretty sure the cans are the original color but the car just faded and ford red matched pretty well to the fade. Looks like I will stick to the ford red color when re painting so I don't have to paint undercarriage. Unless, you know, I somehow win the lottery and can afford to completely tear the body off and start fresh..
