Bringing this back up so you can check out the videos. This is a hot rod that was in a 40 year slumber being driven for the first time ever! Enjoy the videos!
John has the old hot rod at its first car show in 40 years this weekend. Here is the Chev bucket sitting amongst a bunch of fine collector cars at a local arena. The car club jacket is an original from the Pacers Car Club - a fixture in this area in the 60's and early 70's. Enjoy the pics!
Yes but you gotta admit there is nothing confusing about a hot rod! A lot of Dodge roadster bodies were used to build T bucket style rods, but why not go with the unusual and use the front half of a 1918 Chevrolet touring as the builder did here. The old rod had a lot of admirers at the car show this weekend.
John had a Pacers car club plaque and jacket with his car at the show. Around here these are very rare and highly collectible items.
John has been busy putting the finishing touches on the lost hot rod, getting it ready for licesing and then on the road. Here are some recent pics taken with "Jake" at the wheel....
I love it! Preserving a hot rod with history is always cool, but a Flathead powered Chevy hot rod is rare. HRP
First time I've seen this thread and I'm impressed! Glad to hear he pulled the heads... given the moisture conditions on the island, I would have said that was a must before he fired it up. He needs a separate stand for that jacket, it's blocking the photo ops for the car. Love it all...very sweet.
John discovered that the 39 Ford trans would not shift through the gears properly, but a little grinding on one of the shifting forks solved the problem. Now this old rod can be driven, and John is in the process of getting it licensed to put on the street - in our area, that is a detailed process so may take some time. Will keep you posted on the progress.
Is it true that he will have to have fenders mounted on it in order to get it licenced for road use in BC ? I ask because I am building my RPU and it is fender less so far. We can get it licenced here in Alberta without fenders but at some point in the future I plan to move to BC ( The island ) By the way the old car looks very nice. Almost sad that the original builder never really completed it.
Only one way for this to be any better, if it had won top honors in some major show and then discovered after 40 years. Tim
Relocation to the island is a number of years away, retirement basically Not a big number, 5 or so. I'd like to see the old girl I make it out to the island sometimes in summer or whenever we can. In the meantime an interesting thread would be about what the process for licencing involves out there. Larry.
Larry - hope you make it out here soon and have a look at the old hot rod. John is working on a rear suspension problem now that is holding things up - but will soon be back on track for the registration of the rod. Seems strange to be licensing a car that was built 40 years ago, but that's what is happening here!
John took Cosmos' advice and went for a smaller rear view mirror. Other pic show the horn which gives that real old time sound. The rear suspension problem is solved and everything is working well. John continues with the registration and licensing which should be done soon. Then the car is finally on the street which is what we all want to see.
The Chev bucket is now licensed, insured and on the road! Pics to come soon, right now John is having too much fun driving the old hot rod around town!
I still want to hear details on how the licencing process went and any hoops-requirements that had to be jumped through or met. And pictures of it in street legal form would help. Larry.
Thanks for the comments. As for the licensing process, best to deal with the requirements of your particular area.
That may be true, however It would be helpful to know what I might face in making the future move from Alberta to Vancouver Island and transferring a registered hot rod from Alberta to BC. I'm building it and can and will licence it here. I'd like to be able to avoid issues on arriving out to a new home on the island and trying to register my RPU. I can incorporate into my build things like cycle fenders and make them removable ( We don't have to run them out here) and other things as required.
