Does anybody know if there's some way to make new shiny chrome look a little "grayer"? I've got some old chrome parts w/ a rear nice soft color and new stuff looks too bright on the same car. Is there something you can do to the chrome or does the plater have to do something, like not polish the copper as much, or??
I like StevieG's idea best, but you might try some Scotch-Brite or steel wool. Maybe throw some driveway gravel at it for a little extra patina!
No, you have to use media blast for that Nads... This is right up there with Ryan's "don't send me money" for the funniest quote of the week in my book. Jay
Some guys might want that "barn fresh" look, or have a car that really is. New chrome might stick out like a sore dick on some cars... mine would be one of 'em. I thought it was a good question. The steel wool and other abrasives will scratch it, but the flame will "gray" it and still leave the finish. JOE
[ QUOTE ] You are joking right? Does anyone know if sandpapering a CD can make it sound more like vinyl? [/ QUOTE ] HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
It will sound more like vinyl...if you play it on a record player. Sounds just like the end of a record. Now how do I get that 8 track tape outa my VCR. Make that chrome look old by mixing 1 cup of driveway sweepings with 3 cups of water. Stir well and wipe on with a rag. Allow to dry in the sun. Wash off in 3 months.

Especially near the coast or the chemical plants. It'll fix ya right up. It'll also make your paint job real retro lookin' if ya leave it parked outside. Honestly, save up a bit of money and do the rest of chrome. Johnny Cash style if ya have to. One piece at a time. That's what I've been doing on my motorcycle. Big Daddy Eric
Could try using some muriatic acid or lighter acid and then rinse good. Don't leave it on long enough to burn through, just enough to start oxidizing.
Yeah, it was kind of a joke. All those magazine articles about fake patch panel welds made with hot glue guns and throwing cornmeal in your paint to look like rust peppering got me wondering if anybody really has done anything like that to chrome. How about a tech post on how to pull a mould from dented sheetmetal and epoxy it into your fiberglass body? I'm serious about that, but only on Cobra replicas.
You forgot about rubbing thru your paint to make it look "weathered". When I took autobody in highschool, that was called "fucking up" and we got marked down accordingly. Now it is a trend. Go figure. What about that urban myth about coke taking off chrome if you let it sit long enuff? Anyone tried that? Jay
This may be the most stupid post I've ever seen...and that's saying a lot. "old-ifying new chrome" The concept is just Rat-rodderiffic!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!
Coke doesn't do anything to chrome, but it shines up dull copper pennies. I put a chrome nut in swimming pool-strength muriatic acid and left it for a couple of days and it just made it shinier. Maybe not concentrated enough? Swimming pool acid will etch concrete, though.
Yeah sure you were kidding, re49, just like when Pee Wee Herman crashed his bicycle and said , "I meant to do that."
I've been rubbing on my hooter to make it look old, like the rest of me but it works just the opposite! All the wrinkles disappear. I wonder where they go...
