Recently seen this old Merc during a "Garage Tour" that I attended in Iowa. Don't know if this is a "REAL" old kustom or someone's newer attempt (that failed) in building one.
The bodywork appears to be "older" and the right rear quarter has been "crunched". Don't know if it was ever finished and had paint, but the body appears to be stripped possibly after a lot of the work had been done.

Given some of the styling cues I'd say that's an old one. Can't really see somebody going that crazy on a 49-51 Merc today.

Looks interesting. I bet Jack built it based on the rear quarter

Is it crazy that I like it?! Not so much the front but the roof line is pretty cool!

It looks like a post WWII attempt to build a sports car out of a old Merc. I would undo the back and blend in a shortened Merc rear end. The back that way is to busy. I would probably do something in front of the front tires.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. I'm thinking we're blessed that it wasn't finished.:(

There's a hint of Volvo P1800 there with the roof line and body side detail. The Front is very GM Motorama Wildcat-esque. This could have potential in the right hands and the right vision. There is some work that I would re-do (undo) but it is a good base for something different.
I agree that it is probably old and pre-1968 as I can not imagine anybody doing that to a Merc these days or even in the last 25 years.

Not exactly a "Dream Come true". More like a "Nightmare Come True."

  18. There's potential in my opinion. Its an ugly fucker, but everyone is starring at it, so its got something good about it.

From the front it looks like a Manx dune buggy without a hood. Could save the middle replace the rest and have a 2 door sport Merc!!

    That's a late 30's or early 40's GM front suspension, isn't it?

  22. Hell if I showed up at Church naked everyone would stare at me also. Not because of my striking good looks.

That's just wrong brother. Makes me want to burst into song, like all teenagers did in the '50s.

Or perhaps one of several other European Bodied, american powered GT cars, not exactly HAMB material but nevertheless unique.
