Yeah well, I call BS on that weak answer as I have had a Muncie 3sp+od, in split shift mode to get 6 forward gears in a daily driver only vehicle the last 12 years, and my name ain't 'Lucky'. The drawback of the muncie was the od oil would drain into the main case, leaving the od dry. WRONG. As stated elsewhere in this thread if you don't fill the od through it's individual pipe plug, no oil = death of od, you fill it, it ain't draining back. There's tons of information about these BW OD's reprints of the Overdrive Manual are available with excellent pictures. Parts, harder to come by.
I believe the toughest units were installed in the 58 and 59 T Birds and also the 61-63 Fords with the 406 engines.Fine spline input shafts were used. I have one in my Edsel that came from a 58 T Bird. Oldmics
I have two old Packard three on the floor OD trannies. Both are still going strong. One is behind a GMC 248 that was measured on an engine Dyno at 265 HP and torque like you'd never believe. the other is behind a inline L6 292 with side draft 44 mm Webers, a highly modified head and it really puts out the torque. Both have a 10" clutch and also a manual kick down switch on the steering wheel. Both shift smoothly and if one watches the tac they can be shifted without the clutch. Normbc9
