Technical Old school tool

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Glitchy, Jun 24, 2021.

  1. No i'm not describing myself, others would though.

However, every time i need to cut a piece out of some sheet metal i end up using tin snips.
Today i cut over 3 feet so i can make a start on replacing my rotted floors.
I actually find it somewhat relaxing...

Am i the only idiot that does this or do other people do things the (very) old way?

...You done a standup job there...I'm a Wiss aviation snipper however I was very fortunate to snag a Beverly Shear in a Plant Closure and that is something it handles quite well...they are bang on period...yes tin snips are a more typical garage shear as all the others cost more and money's always tight...good exercise but be careful its glove territory...sharp I am surprised you could achieve it with just those...helluva design...

A jig saw or band saw probably got involved here and there...

Along with the Beverly I also got a 50s ARO Air Powered Panel Saw that also could do straight cuts as well but Aluminum was it's primary metal but with a different blade perhaps steel would be a breeze...the cuts fine with minimal distortion...

To this day simple tools are used much more than one would imagine, so I think you have plenty of company...

  5. Got a drawer full of wiss tin snips left , right , straight , some with weird heads in not sure there intended purpose but they get used as well.

I bought a air nibbled years ago I use for long runs like what you just did.

like what @Stogy said , jig saw , band saw , nibbler, angle grinder , etc what ever gets the job done faster n easier I’m on board.

but yes, simple tools bring a smile to my face and they always seem ready to work. The odd time when I grab my air nibbler or shears as they don’t get used very often I gotta tap and bang them to get going, guess the oil gums up after a while .

  6. I have a nibbler too, just can’t stand to use it, those damn itty-bitty crescent moon shaped chips get everywhere and boy do they hurt when you find them on a midnight bathroom run!
