This one is hangin' in my living room. Anyone ever see one like it before, lookin' to find some history about it...
some companies have their signs "built". when you know your good, you have yours "grown". one way or another, your gonna be around for a while!
Sadly, most of those places don't exist anymore... The Lowes "caught" fire in the late 90's, the Capitol is now a vegetarian restaurant, the Palace became an aquarium (I shit you not) but the Restaurant is still there*, now owned by Celine Dion (sorry Vegas, she's your problem now and no, we won't take her back ). * With a strip joint & buffet on top (no, that one ain't owned by Dion) ...
I've seen that sign for over 40 years, going back to when H&B Customs was in business in the 60s and often wondered if it might be for sale. Congrats for taking the initiative to ask. That must explain why it's been there all these years (most of which, the property has been vacant). Hope you're able to get it.
Great looking sign, but apparently not as old as it appears. A little quick Googling turned up a few links for you involving a place called Beatnik Bob's in St. Louis, Mo., which seems to house this museum. Looks to be mostly kind of a fun, goofy, gaudy tourist trap setup, but they do have the "World's Largest Pair Of Men's Underpants" on display. So it can't be all that bad! http://www.citymuseum.org/mmm.html http://www.cravescavesandgraves.com/2008/08/beatnik-bobs-museum-of-mirth-mystery.html Scroll down this page a bit and you'll see a photo of your sign. http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/774?offset=5 You might want to take down your picture here. Maybe their sign got stolen!
Man, that's weird- that's what my girlfriend calls my bedroom! Sorry everybody, a coupla beers and I couldn't help myself
Slightly OT, but that's exactly how I got my old Tokheim 300 gas pump! I was on my way home from work back in the 80's and passed an old gas station that they were tearing down since it had been closed for decades I asked the bulldozer driver what was going to happen to the pumps, and his response was "My job is to clear the lot". I asked if I could take them and he repeated "My job is to clear the lot!" NOTE: two Tokheim 300's WILL fit in the trunk of a 73 Dodge Dart, but you can't close the lid! The steering gets really light too, so be careful!
Here's a new-old piece my shop did recently. It's a completely new sign, but the owners of the restaurant (a Mexican restaurant and tequila bar in Baltimore) wanted it to look like an old neon sign. We used all the old style components (glass housings, exposed pop rivets in places, etc.), weathered the letters and face of the sign using all kinds of flatteners and other tricks, and even fogged in some black paint in various spots to look like soot. We also added extra housings to look like spots where neon used to be...either broken off or no longer in use (these are dummies, and don't have wiring running to them). It was a pretty neat project to put together...now I just gotta get some good night shots!
Fantastic shot! Hard to believe part of the population of Rancho Mirage has tried to do away with the sign...
Do you work for Gable? You guys build some nice stuff. It would really be nice to be able do more custom work but my boss could care less.
