That Terry Cook article about the Fonz was great.
He was a man who espoused the ****ty car before the ****ty car became a thing to be admired.
Am I not mistaken in thinking that that article was actually first printed in the English Custom Car magazine back in the 80s?
Can any Limeys fill me in?
BTW, I just had the pleasure of having Surf Monkey and his wonderful family over at my pad. What a good guy and an amazing artist.
This is indeed a worldwide fraternity, may it long be so.

If you can't find one on the newsstand you can get one from HAMBer Side Valve at www.thehotrodcompany.com along with a lot of other cool mags.

    lol!

I'm sure I wasn't taken seriously when I was calling all the Borders and B&Ns around here.

"Yes, the words 'Old,' School,' and 'Rods' are all spelled incorrectly. Do you have it??"

DrJ, it's not about the guy on TV, it's about Fonz Carloni the late builder of exceedingly radical, Bondo slathered Mercs from New Jersey.
I never met the man but I've heard about his legend.
I got to see one of his creations at Lead East a few years back. It was unlike anything I'd ever seen before.

Books a Million has it in Orlando.
    I've never seen it a 7-11.
I have the hots for the tiny little Italian girl that works at the 7-11 by my work. I don't what it is about her, it's just something.

  12. I just p/u the 2nd issue, and its real good. It beats all the others right now (except Rolls & Pleats).. I hate the name as well, but the mag is going in the right direction. Also has a good article about early juice brakes, which is something I wanted to know more about before I get into a project.. The high school hot rod is also way cool, wish I would have been doing that in high school instead of selling dope to the rich kids, and partying in Mexico.. Now I cant afford a $50. hot rod.. growing up ****s!!

HOOLIGAN, yeah that juice brake article is way comprehensive, truly great work. I think it's by the same guy who wrote the carb article in issue one.

The Orlando Magic **** because of two words, John and Gabriel. He's the general manager, instead of firing coaches willy nilly, the real problem is that loser. He shoulda been fired years ago.

Yep there was an article on the Fonz in CC back in the 80s

I’m sorry but I think the mag ****s, have any of you read the editorial on the back page 1st issue?
It reads to me as if some one who is on the outside looking in wrote it.
It looks like a magazine publisher jumping on the bandwagon.
Ill still buy it for the pictures and the laugh I get from the writers comments.
    Can’t beat CK Deluxe

Anyone got any pictures to post of his cars?

I've looked thru all my Custom car books and the name isn't indexed...
Is his "Fonz" nickname older than the TV version, maybe making the TV character a character of him?
    Very curious is I.

    Weird...my post never showed up.

I loved the article on your kid brother. Not a lot of kids in High School are doing things like that. Most just bolt on fibergl*** **** for their hondas.

Whatdya think of my picture in the upper left corner of the cover?

Hey Walt--I was really suprised to see you in the mag...very cool. I like the clutch lever on your cicle. I was thinking on doing the same on my yama-bobber. Nice to see a top on the merc, too!

I knew Joe Carloni for a very long time, since the 70's. He had even joined our car club for a short time.
Joe was a real character! I mean that in the nicest sense of the word. He had a true love of old cars, Kustoms especially. Especially the Mercs, didn't care if it was a 2 or 4 door, either. Did M***IVE amounts of bodywork to his cars, and usually drove them every day, through rain, snow, whatever. joe was a real backyard builder. Did all of his work with a torch. VERY crudely, too, I guess he was a real forefather to the rat rod movement, when you come down to it.
As ugly, and ratty as his cars were, that's how friendly, and cheerful Joe was. He had a supportive wife, and kids, and brought them to all the car shows. The interior of the cars looked like an explosion at a thrift shop. He always had a Hibachi going, with a coffee pot brewing on it. The trunk of his car had enough equipment in it to do a frame of resto on the car! Torches, big grinder, body filler, tools, EVERYTHING!
I heard a story about a guy that bought one of Joe's Merc's (He had 4 or 5). Seems the guy put it up on a lift to check it out, and spotted a C clamp still attached to the ch***is. Thinking Joe left it there by mistake, he removed it, and the entire trunk floor dropped out!!!!!
Joe almost got killed in one of the Merc's. He and a buddy of his, Jimmy, The Jersey Torch, were out shooting flames in their cars out on the highway. Joe turned off the ignition, to get a nice build up of fuel in the exhaust, for a big blast of flames. Well, the switch kind of locked up, and Joe couldn't steer the car. Went off in a ditch. He couldn't open the doors of the car, due to the damage of the wreck! The car caught fire, and lucky for Joe, he was able to sneek out one of the door windows. VERY lucky for Joe, that he weighed about 85 pouds, dripping wet, cause his cars were so severely chopped, a normal size person would have been Bar-B-Qued!
Joe died a couple years ago, and we all miss him. His funeral, in Keansburg, NJ, was held in January, in some real nasty, cold snowy weather. The town had to call out police to block off the area around the funeral home, there were SO many old cars, and regular cars that turned out to say goodbye.

Great story chopolds, thanks for painting that picture. You too Walt. Man I'm so proud of you getting some ink, it's about time. Thanks for getting the hook up on getting OSR out to our show.
I heard you got Lorne's Merc for your pickup, is that true?
You got yourself a really cool car, now start ripping out that digital dash.
I can't wait to see you, everything's hooked up. I reckon The Psychdevilles are going on around 3 or 4 p.m.

There was also an article on Fonz in the "continental restyling" mags, the early version of rolls`n pleats.
If I remember correctly, the Merc he drove at the time, was later sold to sweden.

Thanks guys. I did trade that 34 for that 51 merc. Its pretty nice. It seemed like it was mine anyway because I did a bunch of work to it several years ago. That dash does have to go, but the A/C stays.

I cant wait for the 8th. I think we are just bringing the hot rod tour bus. Its black primer at least. And I will bring my striping brushes. Is it true that Sammy wont be there? How long do we need to play? We can play longer if you need us to kill time.

Oh yeah we will be playing at the LAST RESORT all bike week with the DOWNSHIFTERS, SLIP AND THE SPINOUTS AND THE LORDS OF THE HIGHWAY. go to the website fo dates and times. psychodevilles.com

    thanks, hotrodwalt
