Hiya, A-Bone! As of late last year, these (and hundreds more) were still in a VERY old bone yard called Bishop's in the state of Maine. It's north of Bangor and a bit north of the town of Appleton. A number of HAMBers and other rodders and racers did grab some cars before winter. BUT, the place was being crushed out; if I understood correctly, the yard was divided into two parts by a road, so all that was on one side of the road was pretty much crushed by the end of '09.

As for am I going to be able to save any: Ohio's a long way to haul a trailer to Maine -- at least beyond MY budget!

Any got any picks of any that came from there?

Welcome to the HAMB, Waterhead! Yeah, you sure said a mouthful -- pretty much what every poster on the AACA forum was saying. For a car to survive nearly a century and to get trashed up or actually junked would be a crime.

But you got my curriosity up with your news that the shop AND car are gone. I'll go see if that thread got carried on or not. MAYBE there was a positive outocme -- we HOPE!!!

ABone1930, I just talked with HAMBer Gigantor today, who lives near Bishop's. He's too bummed to go back right now, but he said the fact is that they are starting on the 1920s stuff and are to proceed to the stuff up behind the house from the later '40s and the '50s. Says he wants to puke, and I think I do, too. I don't mean to deny anybody a reasonable profit on old stuff, but I have to agree with HAMBer Squawblow: Owners (often, not always, 'cause I know an exception) hold out for ridiculous prices, then crush the whole shebang and just get out altogether. I hope nobody takes offense with my words. I just think it's sad to see the old stuff go, after it was saved for 3/4 of a century.

If anybody asks me, I say long-time HAMBer & car nut FordNutz (Pat) of Moosejaw, Saskatchewan, lives in a little piece of Heaven on earth! Not only are he and his wife and kids ALL auto-addicts, Pat has a site dedicated to helping others get old Vintage Tin BACK on the roads & highways (http://vintagetin.multiply.com/). He has several great albums he posted some two years back. When I ran across them, I spent quite a long, enjoyable time checking out the low-rust stuff up his way. I think it's worth posting some of the choicest pix again, on this all-VT-dedicated thread. Enjoy! (FYI, some of this is on a friend's land, and not all cars are still there.)

FreeBird, from postings on this thread, seems to me that there are decent bone yards left in New York state. Finding locations may take some effort on your part. Search New York and New Jersey using the RED "Search This Thread" box at the top of the page, then contact the New York or New Jersey poster via a PM. I think most guys/gals would be willing to give you driving directions. Beats wasting gas just driving around blindly searching for good junkyards.

Another resource that's worked for me is below. These KY guys have compiled a state-by-state list (data base) of junkyards and recently added a search feature (as I understand) to narrow your search to yards with OLD cars. Free registration, and once you learn to navigate the site, it really does work. After a gas-burning wild goose chase last year, I tried RoadKillCustoms and found out what I needed to know about a certain yard without ever leaving my house. Maybe it'll work for YOU, too! Best of luck!

No probs, bro. In the last 40-some years since I started haunting the boneyards, the really old stuff has either disappeared or fallen to such a state that it's mainly only good for camera shots (which is what this thread is mostly about). The best remaining (project) stuff seems to be in more "well drained" areas, such as west of the Mississippi, in southern Canada and (fer real) in Mexico.

TO ALL HARD-BITTEN JUNKYARD JUNKIES (LIKE ME!). After waiting all winter for the return of good weather, I hope you guys and gals will hit your fave boneyards and post more pix here. I went in March and beat the new green growth that makes taking decent pix harder. Anyway, here are a last few choice shots thatfellow HAMBer FordNutz posted a couple of years back, consolidated to this ALL-VT thread! Enjoy!

These are some keen shots from Pennsylvania bone yards taken by a car fiend called Hershey-on Line. They're from a series of DVDs he makes available on eBay for a nominal cost. NOT doing a commercial for him, though he's a cool guy who obviously loves old cars. Just trying to make HAMBers aware of yet another place or resource to see cool junkyard scenes. Costs nothing to go punch in "junk yard" link to his stuff. And you don't have to buy anything to see 10-12 pix from each of his junkyard videos. He mentioned to me that all vids are at least an hour long junkyard trip (they're "videos," not stills). The extra one is longer, 'cause it covers two yards.

Here are some neat junk yard shots posted last month on WebShots by "MyEdsel" under the heading of ugly cars. MyEdsel clarified that some cars shown weren't so much ugly as needing a good home and TLC!

Well, shoot fire. Pix didn't show. Can't win 'em all, eh? So, here are some OTHER pix. Never say die!

Wow, this straight '54 Merc Montery 2-D in Montana is the kind of thing you dream of stumbling across in a boneyard! Jeesh, need a hood, but pretty free of dents, too.

Somebody in Holbrook, NY, has a sense of humor AND a keen sense of marketing old junkyard parts cars! As I recall, the "Met" started in '51
and went through '62. I know a guy (seriously) nicknamed "Tiny"
down in Tennessee who'd die to have these sweet '58 Metropolitans.
Meantime, it's just funny to see two of these little NASH critters trying
to make little two-tone "Met" pups! LOL

Hiya, Freebird! jrblack30 posted those from a bone yard in "Pothole Infested Western New York" on Post #181. If you go back there and PM him, most HAMBers are happy to share locations with fellow HAMBers. It was a yard he and HAMBer Thunderbirdesq hit last fall before winter drove us all indoors in this part of the country.

Now that warm weather has finally rolled back around, I am hoping, and looking forward, to seeing new shots from fellow HAMBers going out to their nearest favorite junkyards again!

BTW, have you had a chance to hit RoadKillCustom's site yet? Lots of good leads there for anybody who puts in a little time.

And yeah, I couldn't resist the kooky shot of the Mets' "reproducing" ! CLASSIC sight gag! LOL

Here's a pretty darn sad story. HAMBer ShagRat found a Dodge Brothers truck under this collapsed shed & tried to rescue it, but the old man wouldn't budge on it. So THERE it sits, in Illinois. A fitting post for the long-running tread, "Sitting and Rotting . . . Picture Thread." Great if you love old vintage tin, BUT stories like this can be a little depressing!

These photos are posted on the "Junkyard Life" site of publications artist, car nut and blogger Jody Potter who bills himself as from "the deep South" and raised by a junkyard owner in his formative years. So, not only does he drag home greasy, rusty project cars like most of us, his site reflects on life in his home region, including junkyards, barn finds, high-performance cars, etc.

Jody did the first four artful Alabama shots at "Birdeye" Simms' Jefferson County Auto Parts, one of the ever-dwindling numbers of boneyards that have staunchly hung onto the really old stuff! THANKS, Jody! Folks, this is one of the old-timey junkyards with tons of real "atmosphere" you could cut with a knife!!!
