History Old Time Junk Yard Photos PIX 1920 to 1970

Welcome back to this thread, IsettaJohn! And welcome, Scotty-T!!! Wow! The 'vette boneyard (glass-yard? LOL) really got my attention! I started looking for a '63 split-window first thing!

This is a special pic you sent, IsettaJohn. When
anybody clicks on it and loads it up to full-size, they
can't escape the fact that MOST of the vintage stuff is
endangered OR already gone!

We have to save as much as we can. And barring
that, we need to take pictures of what is fast-disappearing.

 

Man, I'd love to get a peek under the Chrysler's hood! A few more shots from Hershey on Line. He has shot video in a number of yards in the NY/PA region with older vehicles in abundance and offers them individuall and in sets on eBay. Not a commercial for him so much as just a tip of where us car nuts can see more keen old cars!

First old, abandoned-car we've had from Arkansas on this
thread! First. And that only leaves Hawaii out of ALL 50 U.S.
states! Any HAMBers from Hawaii? If so, ANY broken down
oldies in remote places, or are the laws too stringent in Hawaii?

tremendous input from Canada (where cars generally
don't rust down as fast and are better project cars,
ya know?), We've had pix from about all provinces,
except for the NORTH-most, like the Yukon and the
Northwest Territory, plus Quebec and Prince Edward
Isle in the east. YOU guys know and love your old cars,
hotrods, customs AND vintage tin in general. Again,
WELCOME!

Earl, because of re-badging for the Canadian market,
etc., I don't recognize two of the cars. There's the
Henry J, of course, and the Nash on the left. What

Hey, man, you sort of touched on a good point, and I should probably update the concept of the thread. When I asked the original question, I was actually looking for pix of OLD junkyards. But it was fine that folks started posting CURRENT pix, too, of HAMB-friendly cars sitting in junkyards, begging for attention as project cars, or, at least as PARTS donors. Heck, this has been fun, and I hope everybody else has had HALF as much fun as I have had, seeing their input!!! GOD BLESS THE HAMB!

 

The blue/white 4-door looks like a '30 Essex or Hudson. I believe that was the only year that didn't have suicide doors.

Hi, BoydWho! Thanks for narrowing it down to Hudson/Essex. The simplicity of the grille shell reminded me of Jordan, but I could see it wasn't that. If it's an Essex, those were getting pretty scare by then -- and about to be replaced by the Terraplane! Great find, too, Earl!!!

My pleasure! After looking again I think it's an Essex, not a Hudson. Essex had vertical bars in the grille while Hudson were horizontal.

I'd love to get my hands on the old motorcycles in that one huge pic.

 

Fellow HAMBers, as you know, I've tried to pull great vintage-tin
junkyard shots together in one place, so that people don't have to chase all over the 'net hunting for great pix to take them back in time. But you are probably ALSO aware that SOME sites are either so big -- or so outstanding -- that even showing a couple of sample shots can't do them justice. So, I ALWAYS provide links and pointers, if available, to get you all hooked up with those great sites!

Now, I knew the name flickr, of course, but I stumbled on a flickr
special feature today that simply DEFIES DESCRIPTION!!! I want
you to GO there! You may get lost for a day, you may not ever get back, AND I think a good many folks will become regular flickr
users (it's FREE). I can't even fathom how huge this flickr resource is, but they have what seems to be a fantastic search engine that can take you on myriad routes through the site -- called, BTW, The World's Best Photos of decay and oldcars - Flickr Hive Mind (fiveprime.org/hivemind/Tags/decay,oldcars).

The artful lead-off "detail" shot, above, is a perfect example of the pro-quality photography on the site. It's by flickr member
"Junkstock" and he took it at Deer Valley Auto Parts in Arizona,
his FAVE site for old-car photo ops. Below are two more exem-
plary pix as a sampler ONLY. YOU MUST GO TO THE 'NET SITE
AND SPEND SOME TIME, FOLKS. I just can't say enough for this
wonderful old-car resource.



This shot is one of the finest color-mapping jobs I've seen featuring
a junkyard car. It is by flickr member Daniel Willans who has many,
MANY more great pix available to view on the site I mentioned. It's a
'54 Super Wasp, in Australia.



flickr member Brian Auer captured this great DAWN shot on a Pitt
County, North Carolina, farm. Folks, these 3 pix don't EVEN scratch
the surface! If you love junk yards, cars in barns & fields, cars out

You meant 'old' photos (1920-70) of junk yards, not 'new' photos of old junkyards, right?
Fascinated with the 'old' photos, there are several other threads of current photos of junkyards with old cars.
Anyway, thanks for starting the therad!

 

Hi, CarlS. Yup, originally I threw out a general question, and I was looking for OLD pix of OLD junkyards. We got a ton of those, but guys & gals on the HAMB have contributed PLENTY of OLD cars, still sitting in junkyards all over the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Australia, many places in Europe, probably more I can't recall at the moment.

Carl, I think it just shows that there are project cars still out there. And in the rustier climes, there still seem to be PARTS cars, too.

I've had a ton of fun gabbing with guys about things I didn't dream people would volunteer. Turns out, EVERYBODY seems to share the same bittersweet feelings when walking through junkyards where there are faded CLASSICS still rusting away and waiting to be saved, or at least contribute parts that will see the highways and streets again. So, in that respect, I think you might call the whole endeavor serendipitous. LOTS of great stuff I surely never expected!!!

Some of my most vivid and cherished memories of hot rodding in the fifties and early 60s are of walking, crawling and climbing around looking for parts and most often just looking at the battered, rusting hulks of tin and cast iron that survived the scrap drives of WW2.
