2. I thought I was about the only guy that got that sorta feeling walking around those places, sometimes my imagination gets the best of me.

What a killer thread, super cool pictures but it also makes a guy kinda angry to know how much killer stuff just got trashed/still gets trashed. Puts it all into perspective I guess!

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread. :D

That's why you bring a package of hot dogs with you. "Most" of the times thats all you needed. I can remember laying under a car getting something with a dog or 2 nipping at your legs. Ungrateful hounds!

If you're looking for a Packard, check out Harry's U-Pull-It in Hazleton, PA. Their inventory currently lists a 1946 Packard. Might be worth looking into.

The top 3 pics were from a private yard off of Hwy 47 about 15 or so miles east of Troy. Good guy who let stuff go cheap back then - I've got several sets of flathead heads hanging on my garage wall that I got for 5$ a set back in the 80s. Not sure if the place is even around anymore. Last pic I think was up near Kirksville.

Edit:
Just did a Google Map and it looks like many are gone but there are still some there.
Hwy 47 East of Troy between Cherokee Lane and County Rd 683.

This one looks saveable...and Caddilacs are worth it. Sad to see, that even in europe where there is not sooo much stuff on the yards such cars are thrown away.

Vintage or just timeless? Honestly, don't know which! Maybe BOTH! Thanks
AGAIN to Frankie47, for locating this exquisite winter photo. It seemingly shows
that something beautiful can come, even out of a sad junkyard tableaux of our
beloved vintage tin, in the eternal embrace of Mother Nature. Somehow,
perfect for Christmas for people who dig trad cars, trucks and customs, often
built out of junked cars and parts! :)

I know that this "Christmas Card" is a tad O.T., but what BETTER way to say
THANKS:) to all who follow this thread? We don't move fast:rolleyes:, but I think
the QUALITY on this thread is just fine. Not every single post is excellent,
but most every one is earnest and in the spirit of the thread theme. Makes me
glad to know you all, friends! THANKS to all contributors and the
many visitors who will probably put the views over the HALF-
MILLION mark!

God Bless the HAMB!
Merry Christmas to all, and Happy, Healthy New Year! :D

About 15 years ago there was a complete white 59 El Camino in a Junk yard on the N7 road (south of Paris), I didn't have the money nor the place back then, I like to think it was saved...

16. Could be anywhere really but it does remind me a bit of a place I was in and out of around 15 years ago in Skaneatles Falls, NY. He had a lot of cars stacked like that, but was mostly 60s-70s iron by the time I was there.

Keen, moody perspective shot from the quasi-military graveyard
in southern Belgium that Lord of deScoot has posted numerous
photos before. Don't know if this one has been included in this
thread, but it caught my eye.

HAPPY 2013, everybody!:D:cool:

The Cord graveyard of our dreams!

Well, that's what I thought at first when HAMBer 29BowTie posted this over on the "Vintage Shots
From Days Gone by" thread. Turns out, the photo is from the November '49 issue of Popular Science
magazine, and happily proves that not all old-time "junkyards" rusted down to nothing! The article
is below -- GREAT read! (Clip to enlarge, then click again on image to make each page bigger for

21. Anyone else notice that the banners and signs on the sides of the cars say something about "a JALOPY KILLED..." such and such a person??? So we're NOT the first generation to suffer at the hands of fools who build unsafe cars and the fools who try to legislate old cars out of our lives.

Depending on the wheelbase, it could be a La Fayette, or an Ambassador straight 6, or Ambassador straight 8..

Very cool thread, I have really enjoyed looking through it

Im suprised there has been no mention of king ziegler salvage of scotland, SD in this thread

place was huge(30+ acres and all old iron) he died in the later part of the 90s and i heard it all got crushed in 2005, i have pics somewhere from a trip there in about 99, place was amazing, ill have to dig them and others up, there was an old 39 international pickup in the trees of a place i lived for a long time but shortly before i moved some guys drug it out to make a rat rod

Back from the war! This keen pic of a '40 Packard veteran came from the vast
Library Gallery at PackardInfo.com. Unfortunately, there was no more info,
but we can HOPE that this war horse lives on in some form!

Alfred "King" Zeigler

Hey there, BRAINS, big THANKS for the link to the well-written article on "King" Zeigler and his Car Farm by Bernie Hunoff of South Dakota Magazine, Nov/Dec 1996! :) Not only are junkyards like his getting scarcer with each passing year, SO are guys like him! These guys were/are characters, each with his own eccentricities and endearing qualities (which, sometimes, can be the same thing! LOL).

Bernie does a THOROUGH job of painting a picture of the yard layout near Scotland, SD, and vintage-vehicle contents for the reader, then proceeds to reveal the mind and manners of King himself. It's the portrait of a HAPPY man! And, for the many who'd probably assume that running a junkyard is a greasy, grimy -- almost miserable -- way to eke out a living, THAT is quite a revelation, indeed!

I'm sure that ANY HAMBer old enough to have "patronized" old-time junkyards run by war vets like King would agree that today's "pick-apart" yards, with their computers, lack the "personal touch";) of the rugged individuals who not only ran the yards but who usually ALSO gave each yard a family surname and a feel all its own! Tales of grumpy old guys with shotguns and bad junkyard dogs abounded. But most of the old fellas I got to know actually had hearts of gold and just wanted a fair shake, instead of people stealing from them and breaking more parts than they bought! Duh!

But, no matter how many yards I visited in the last 50 years, I can honestly say that no two were exactly the same, ya know? Unfortunately, most of the old guys -- and old yards -- are now long gone. :( Where they were, there's now silence and weeds growing, or there are housing developments. Yards that come fondly to mind off hand included Zimmerman's, Tolliver's, Crispin's, Coyne's, Beck, Linn's, Columbus Recycling, Woody's, Edison's, Wirthman's . . . HAMBers chime in with the junkyard names that live in your own great vintage-tin memories!

My only regret about Bernie's article on King is that there were no PHOTOS taken inside the yard. Mental pictures are nice, but for us car guys, real pix are even better. IF any HAMBer:D in the vicinity of Scotland, SD, has any photos (including you, BRAINS), PLEASE post them on this thread!

R.I.P., King!
