Hot Rods Old time radiator water neck fix?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Dirtyest Devil, Sep 1, 2009.

  1. So who has thought of a soloution for shaving the top of a radiator clean for a filled grill shell?
Yes, I could put a new pressurized water neck in, but I would like something old timey, doesn't have to be pressurized. I could put an elbow on a stock A or 32 cap, but they are kind of big, and there isn't a lot of room in the top tank. Yes it could be flattened, but wondering if anyone has put a smaller neck and cap on a hot rod while retaining an "old time" look. Maybe something from a tractor supply place, etc.
I've checked with local supply houses, industrial places, looked at swap meets, etc. Come up with nothing yet, and need to change two rad's as I just so happen to only own original, but filled 32 grill shells. They were all done real nice too, so I don't really want to change em.

Thanks for any help... I'm sure you guys have stumbled upon something neat that will work!

also, you could put the filler in the top of the hose....

  4. Nice Zach... so a stock cap fits on that?

I dont wanna use a new pressurized, and I wanted a little smaller of a cap. Was just thinking someone might have a smaller source?

    Nice rad though...

gotcha, thought you were just trying to get away from vertical height....

I've seen something in a book that looks like a cast elbow with some sort of square headed plug in it? must be vented elsewhere?

I have no idea what book though or I'd post a picture for you...

If its non pressurized you could just make something though, maybe even use a br*** garden hose cap on a threaded elbow?
Thats what I used for a gas cap on the motorized bike I built...

  7. Well, its getting close that I'm actually going to go out on a hunt for something, so I'm sure I'll find something.

You should see me... just came in for lunch cause I cant get my driveshaft/torque tube on while spinning my tires and pushing the rear forward for locating by myself. Ha! Gonna go give it another whirl... hahahaa. Wish we all lived closer...nobody home to help. Might go steal my 88 yeard old neighbor!

Love to see some more rad. ideas...

lift one wheel off the ground on a jack, put on a board if in the dirt/stones
stick 2x4 through end of the wishbone and use as a lever against the ground to pull the rear forward while spinning the wheel thats off the ground with your foot....that'll spin the driveshaft till it pops in place....

hard to explain but its a quick easy way that works if the body isnt in the way....

  10. Hahaa, that is exactly what I'm doing... still tricky. I'll get it... luckily im in the garage today. See you in Hershey!

  11. Ha, got it in... 1st 30 seconds trying. The key is to just stop and eat lunch! Put that in the directions...

there are quite a few like that in Montgumerys books. always though that was just a plain old pipe thread plug (like in a 39 trans) . you can get bronze pipe elbows which would solder to a br*** rad.

Hey Mel, waasup... Yeah, that 90 degree square neck is the way. You could fab it all up with some flat stock, exhaust tube, a cap reciever, you get the idea. We need to hook up at Hershey this year, missed ya last year. I'll be in the green field with a Packard (go figure...).

  14. Yeah, that could be an option, thanks! Going to keep looking...

  15. yeah brother... I'm in the Red field this year. We got spaces form Early Ford V8 sales as they are our buddies. I'm going to roll in Tuesday, got no where to stay... probable park my *** in the car. Wed thru Sat me and my buds got a condo on the Hershey property.

Going to bring a chopped 32 sedan body for slae, real nice piece. My 36 three window... I think, and a nice 30 sedan body. Plus lots of other ****... Can not wait! Weather feels like Hershey weather already!
