So the question is whether this is a dumb idea or not. I've tried a couple of times to get this going locally, using flyers, and have gotten almost zero response. I've also reached out to a couple of the local clubs and pitched the idea with no response or feedback. The idea is to get a minimum of a handful of rods together on a weeknight. Say we pick the 2nd Thursday of each month. We meet at one of the few local retirement homes. We have already put a sign up sheet at the residence for those that live there to sign up. We take those residents that want to go out for a ride in a period car from their youth. We take a half hour cruise around town, maybe to an ice cream or coffee shop as a half way point, then back to the residence. Just an event to give people that might not get many chances to get out at all, a chance to relive some of their memories and have some thrills. Is anyone doing this in their areas? Any suggestions on getting something like this started?
Man what a great idea. I dress up like Santa Claus every Christmas and the wife and I go to an old folks home and hand out presents and take pictures. I'm going to look into your idea for next year. I've done little car shows at old folks homes but never a cruise.... we got to get this going.... ya see I'm 64 years old and I'd love to be able to ride in a cool old car when I get OLD!!!LOL
There a couple clubs in our area that puts on a car show in the parking lot of the Veterans Home a couple times during the summer. One club being restored cars and another classics to street rods. Money made during that day goes into their funds for outings and field trips for the Vets. One of the outings is a trip to a local fishing hole for a day of fun. You most certainly will see a sparkle in their eyes when the old cars show up. Very popular among the residents and the car owners. Cars are also supplied for veterans to ride in during the yearly Veterans Day parade.
kensousa - Your heart is in the right place and be persistent. Try for one or two cars to start with some close friends and they can help spread the word. It's never easy to start some new and different and your idea is different, but a great cause. Keep after it and talk it up at car shows, anywhere where they are car people. Good luck and let us know how things turn out. CRUISER <SCRIPT type=text/javascript> vbmenu_register("postmenu_4554196", true); </SCRIPT>
Remember that a lot of these guys hit the rack pretty early so a late afternoon gig is probably best. Just showing up with a few old cars and bs'ing with the older gents and maybe or maybe not giving rides sounds like a good idea. Your time spent with them is just as important as rides or the cars. When my daughter was in high school she got involved in a program that took a couple of dogs to the local nursing home a couple of times a month. She took my lab who was quite the gent as far as dogs go and he really hit it off with the older men there. He learned that when she gave him a bath that the next day he got to go see his buddies at the nursing home. I'd suggest one thing. Take the guys with the cars that look decent but aren't afraid to have their cars touched. The older gents do like to touch the cars. <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
I'm doing the same thing here in Ohio. So far my response is pretty good, and lots of ideas from other folks. Theres a thread I started that has alot of good ideas going as well as the thread about cruising Van Nuys blvd. Theres a ton of folks that wanna drive and hang out, its just getting a collective thought process rolling. I think I'm making headway here. Love to see it go to the next level
