My 52 dodge has an original tire for a spare. Size 6.00x16, plenty of tread, nylon cords. It has some dry rot cracks but its on the hanger with 35 psi in it. I wonder if its any good.
If I had a flat and it was a last resort I would use it......I would not run on it for any extended time. But at least to get me to the next tire shop.....I am not afraid.
Of course you're not afraid-you have a Tommy gun. I would use it for a spare - until I could get something better.
I guess I live on the edge too. I would put my money and safety on old tires over the new junk made today....
We drove the 34' Ford hotrod to the salt & back on swap meet tires (1262 miles, one way)........So, I would say don't use them.
Awe hell, what's the worst that can happen ? You will most certainly cause more monetary damage to something else when it goes than a new tire could ever cost. That right there tells you its cheaper to run new ones. You'll be lucky if nobody gets hurt bad , but even a little bit hurt will cost way more than a new set. You can take your chances but they ain't good in the slightest sense of the word. I'd take odds and bet heavily that the old tire and you really fuck something up, that is if we were betting on stupid.
There has been good advances made in tires and sorry but old tires are not as well made as some new ones. If the sidewalls are showing signs of dry rot please listen to the advice above - its all good. Loosing a tire ant any speed can cause injury - ask me whats it like to loose the front tires completely when doing 60 mph in my OT 68 Chrysler with 6 on board - SCARY - and I thought they were greta tire but when the tire guys read the numbers on the side wall they said the tires were over 20 years old and the type and style of manufacturer then did not have as much silicone in them as what is in a tire these days
Tires lose half their strength in 5 years. How much strength they have after 60 years, only a mathematician could calculate a figure that small. Keep it for show but don't trust your life to it.
shit I was going to say 20 mph.....either way I definitely wouldn't use it unless it is a emergency. But I'm not scared to bolt it to my car and drive it around the block as some of you seem to be......but I have a tommy gun....
