The Glass Pool Inn is about to be razed... the Tam-o-Shanter is gone, the La Concha is 1/2 gone, the Vagabond Inn is gone, all the cool mid century homes that were behind the Desert Inn are gone... thanks to that jackass Steve Wynn, who has the money to preserve, but would rather build more ugly New Vegas type hotels and condos. It sucks. But at least on the bright side, is the new condo going up called the Metropolis... I would like to live there but I'm short about a half mil... but I'm willing to take donations... hahahaha Here is a pic of the new Metropolis.... really cool for a new building. I'm glad to see that there are still a few archetects out there that prefer design over utility! http://www.pictures-of-luxury-homes-plans-communities.com/
i was there for a wedding this weekend, binions horseshoe was closed, are they closed for good or what? wes
part of the reasons i love the flick "fear and loathing in L.V." some of the hotels it was shot in were destroyed right after filming...all that style gone... i'm interested in, but can't remember the name, of a place, in new jersey i think? where the town is actually embracing what is left of the neon and mid century archetecture, even building new buildings in mid century styles. its really too bad that we insist on destroying all of this countrys history. especially for the sake of the shit they put up now.
I hear you Ray, pretty soon this whole country will be one huge strip mall. I went back to my home town in New Hampshire recently, a town that always prided itself on being a "small" town, and now there's a Home Depot and a Borders. I guess I'm glad for the people that live there, but it just didn't feel like "home."
I stayed at the The Glass Pool Inn on the last trip that I took with my 23 roadster. Didn't feel all that safe at that place, it was getting run down. Real shame- used to be a neat place to stay. Sold the roadster that weekend, now the motel's gone.
It sucks doesn't it Gracie...I always thought the downtown area should have embraced it's history rather than dress it up or knock it down. The small cool places are almost all gone There is a small area in there that has been bought up by the cultural arts movement. You can always hang out at the yard or stop by the doughnut shop for a little nostalgia... Wes, after the owner was murdered or OD'd (still in court for a second time) his sisters ran it in to the ground. Federal Marshals closed the doors and seized the cash on hand (something about operating cash flow & $ for benefits). Harrah's is in the process of reopening it.
last time I stayed at the tam o' shanter (October) I had to fight the crackheads off to get back into my room... good thing I was full of ASSJUICE...
man....what was that cop show set in 1950's or early 1960s vegas? back in the 80s....had "runaway" as the theme song, I think... all that neat old stuff gone! that's too bad....like was said earlier in another reply, just to put up the new crap, it's sad, really... Hope I'm around to see the "new" crap be deemed "old" and torn down and replaced with "new" stuff that is actually "old" called "new" again...maybe the metropolis is a good sign as far as architecture goes??
I just saw the original Ocean's 11... I'm like, WTF, THATS not vegas, everything is only one story tall... and its all... deserty lookin....
Crime Story ruled!!! I still have every episode I taped off USA network (missed HALF of one 'cause of some movie overrun), when I had cable, 'cause I didn't have kids to worry about what they see....
Some day they are going to realize what an attraction it would have been to actually still have THE stage where Sammy, Dean and Frank performed. etc., etc. Too late now.
[ QUOTE ] good thing I was full of ASSJUICE... [/ QUOTE ] so you,ve been to the doubledown, huh! got married out there last july, yikes, that place rules.
Gracie, You've still got "The Happiest Place On Earth" and The Bonanza. Ever head out to Legends? BTW, I'm one of those Californians that owns a home in Henderson
Hell, I remember when Vegas did indeed look like the old Oceans 11. In high school we would cruise Fremont Street all Friday and Saturday night. Now, You can't drive down the top part and I wouldn't want to drive down the lower part for the bullets flyin and all the crackheads. I recall the day we skipped school to go out to the Convention Center and watch them film Viva Las Vegas, actually saw the King leaving his trailer. Saw Ann Margaret too, she was HOT! Still is I guess!
The only thing traditionally old about Las Vegas is that everything is perpetually re-made new. Most of our cars are older than 99% of Las Vegas! But I know it does make it hard getting around a town if you drive by landmarks and not street names
I go to Vegas frequently & love the place. Bummer about some of the older places going under, but that's just the way it goes. With the ridiculous pace of construction out there, I'm surprised any of the old hotels are still standing. There's a Las Vegas salvage yard that has all of the big old-style Vegas signs. It's right around the block from my attorney's office. It's pretty trippy.
[ QUOTE ] I thought you said Old Vegans are almost gone [/ QUOTE ] I thought he was talkin about the mid 70's chevys!!! I just found a real solid vega wagon, and that's in MI! Just keep lookin..... you'll find em!
On any Friday or saturday night at the street corner where you have the MGM Grand, Excalibur and New York, New York you have more people than in the city I live in and it's the second biggest city in Idaho. And those rooms on the weekend rate around 300 bucks a night, 2 night minimum are making more than what we here pay in a month's rent or mortgage. And that's just the rooms. All those people are gambling, eating, grabbing souveniers and going to shows too. 1 street corner, think about it. They couldn't give a shit less about the history with money like that flowing!
HA! Assjuice appears to have made the rounds...$2.75 a shot or 3 for $9.00 One of the bartenders used to keep a can of cream of corn and slip a couple kernels in for effect The Double Down, The Happiest place on Earth, You puke, you clean!
Thanks for the tips Gracie. We had a good time especialy the time in the Corvette rental car. I drove it like a stole it.
last time I was in LV No elevators,no kids, no crack heads or bums but then to it was almost 40 years ago.
So damn OT but here goes- Gracie, That Metropolis condo thing isn't any different than the other "theme" buildings. The thing that makes old Vegas buildings great is that they are "of thier time". I would even say that the Luxor is "of it's time" and will be a great landmark for that, but what we don't need is more modern curtain wall buildings dressed up as deco/medieval/pirate/whatever. Preservation of old buildings that embody a strong spirit of the age/time/place like some of the old vegas buildings did is only half of it. The other half is learning to appreciate what it is about contemporary buildings that do the same. The Metropolis is the PT Cruiser of contemporary buildings.
