There's a reason people live out in the middle of no where, they like their privacy. Very few people over the age of 60 actually have computers, the internet, cell phones etc., even in a big city like Chicago. Most don't embrace credit cards and the over 70 crowd usually does business in cash. You have to be real polite, almost awkwardly by current trends. The words thank you, may I and please have real meaning with the older folk. Another problem that comes up is eye contact, older folks made more of it and a lack of it or a nervousness to make it seem to rub them the wrong way. As he saw it he was giving you the person to person gift of seeing his most cherished possession in the whole of his years, he was making a personal connection with you, a new friend. Then you inadvertently violated that by pulling out a camera to share his 80 year secret with the whole planet in 2 seconds. He may have had to chase off pests trying to talk him out of it in the past. All that flashed into his mind. Not your fault, how could you know how old folks think. Kind of sad, I'm not sure you could even fix the situation, some minds are like a bear trap and real hard to open back up once snapped shut. If you feel bad send him a holiday card with your apologies and your regrets next year, offer your friendship and maybe he will reciprocate. It's worked for me to revive a friendship a few times.

Well said, I just do not get it. In a world where privacy is under constant threat I just cannot see what is so critical in the urgency to tell the world every little unimportant detail of life. In this case those were details that belonged to a stranger who opened the door on good faith.

I think the original poster should go back and with a peace offering and not even mention the cars unless the owner does. Step up guy and do the right thing.

Wow very nice! Lincoln, NH, same place we are cruising to this weekend. Snowmobiling up Mt. Washinton, we can't wait!
