Hey! New to the board and looking for some help/info. Anybody know if there are "high torque" 12 volt starters available for a 1950 olds with a 303 in it. Or if ayone knows what will work with this engine. I would be greatly appreciative. I want to bring this thing back from the dead, and run the 303. Someone converted it to a 12 volt system, but i don't think it has the "right" starter in it. Thanks.

If you want 'high torque' just use the 6V one with the 12V system. What's wrong with the starter right now? Bendix not mesh with the flywheel?

i know the 53' starter is the only year for 12 volt to match the 303 flywheel/tooth and gear size ****

The difference between the two (6 volt and 12 volt) will be mainly in the armature windings. More winding will create more torque.
Any good starter shop can rebuild it for you to run 12 volt.

Suburban Starter and Alternator in Roseville , Mi rebuilt mine, and it's spinning a 11:1 solid lifter '54 324 with no problems. Cost about $100.00 if I remember right.

I think some of the early caddies also work. They would mount upside down on the driver side and right side up on the p*** side when using the starter change over.

6 volt starter has co**** teeth and larger bore rod that goes thru the center of starter gear, 12 volt starters have slightly smaller gear so the shaft is smaller ,only fit fine tooth flywheel ring gear, with 176 teeth or you get a loud grinding noise during start up. that is how to tell them apart.I am currently using a chev 6 cylinder starter , with a cross over that has the started more in an up right postion than the slanted stock starter support housing, it mounts to to the side and misses the frame,in my Model A and is 12 volts and spins the 324 just great.
