this might be a really stupid question but i am going to ask anyway. I am about to put in the crank on my 55 olds 324, do the main bearings go tang to tang? just want to make sure before i do some thing wrong. thanks for any help
BMW cars and bikes at least up until the 80s or so have the bearing tangs opposite each other. That's the only one I can think of. Attached should be a picture of a BMW mc rod off EBAY. I had to brutalize the brightness to make the bearing tang visible. Not there are dowels locating the cap and rod. Before installing the crank it I'd install the main caps without bearings and torque them, then use a bore gage to check for size, taper and cap shift. At least feel the parting line between cap and block for shift/overhang. If the caps are on backwards I'd expect a very feel-able step/overhang. I'd guess only 3 or 4 of them could be installed 180. Doesn;t the rear main have a seal built into it? Was it a running engine? sometimes folks take a cap or caps from another engine, and they will be way wrong. Another reason to check the bores out with a bore gage
True. The 324 main caps are all factory numbered, but I forget which way the number is facing. But yes, the caps won't fit right at all if they are backwards, at least not all of them could. Also, check your crank for cracks where the 90* notches are on the throws. Mine was cracked 1955 324
Thanks for the help guys. I got a new rear seal from goatroper Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
