Then come build a Pontiac 455..

There's only one block size, and it's still lighter than a BBC

I put my Olds 455/Turbo 400 in my subframed '51 Chevy pickup back in 1991. It's been a great combination for me over the years. Still have it...

I keep having to replace a tire on my mono-legger Nova rear end though...

I've two other 455/400 packages squirrelled away for rebuild one of these days! I might try a 200-4R, next time.

    there's a reason for that...

The toranado has a different angle on the lifter bank. What that amounts to is a different camshaft. an EXPENSIVE camshaft.

along with that, they have an extremely limited amount of intakes/and other parts avalible. The crank and heads are the parts to have out of that configuration.

    are You sure it's not a 425?

and Yeah...Those manifolds are bitchin. They usually fetch a small fortune on EGay.

The last year for the 425 was 67. Can't be a 45 deg block because no 455 Olds ever had the odd camshaft. In 69 all 455's were the same engine no matter what it's out of. The only differences is some had high compression pistons and a longer duration camshaft.

  7. No... we're talking Horse Power and Torque per dollar... and when I built my small blocks to produce those same numbers... I had a lot more cash in them than my bolt on Olds!

All my smallblocks were budget builds... all 30 of them...!

I've kept all my receipts from 1974 from my first build to the last and I did 100% assembly on 90% of my engines!

Edelbrock has a kit that includes an Intake, Carb, Heads, and cam... however once you know what direction you're heading... you can get better deals by piecing together the combination through ebay, message boards and word of mouth!

Brand new Eagle Crank and rods for $2k...!

    yep....accurate info

  9. Yeh but you forgot about the heads, that is where the differance came in. they had c,d,f and so on.

    All I can say is after owning 2 70 442's them old sleds ran damn good! 1st was a 70 442 W30 other was a 70 442 W31. Kinda wished I still had them along with my 70 Challenger R/T 340 convertable.

In terms of parts, about the only thing that is not readily available in the aftermarket, is a decent steel or Billet crankshaft. Would that be right, oh knowledgeable ones? I'm not talking about the std steel or NU ones, but a billet one suitable for big HP.

You are correct.Billet cranks are not on the shelf but can be ordered.Don't know how much you mean by big horsepower, I am going 9.70s in a 3400lb car with a 455 and an offset ground 425 factory steel crank and parts that are not too hard to get,but it does require alot of after market parts.Much more HP than this and the blocks become a problem.

The Olds powered Willys you refer to from the Goodguys Series is mine. Blown, carbed, 400 turbo, all steel coupe. With my lead ass in it and 8 gals of 112 fuel, it's 3900#. Best so far was Bowling Green 2 weeks ago...10.40 @ 130mph. The car and engine was built to be a street rod with occasional races. Now it seems to be the other way around. It is street legal, insured, and driven on the street.

As to the Olds power, it uses OEM internals, except for the pistons. Early production iron heads with a bit of porting. We just finished the 8th season on the motor with only minor maintainance/upkeep.

For a street driver or occasional race deal, OEM parts are fine. Don't think you will see 6500 rpm repeatedly and not have to pick up the pieces. This is a torque motor, not a zinger (high rpm) like a small block Chevy. Keep it at no more than 5500 and it's fine.

For SERIOUS numbers, good parts are available, but expensive. There are several vendors all over who can direct you/take your money. Talk with someone who has experience with these things as far as big hp/torque numbers.

Gregg's injected engine is way more serious than mine...it's all out race. He's got a handle on things. I'd like to think I have a pretty good handle on mine for a semi serious piece.

Mine is on my website www.geezergassers.com Mine is the dark blue, no lettering, '40 Willys coupe.

Don't be afraid of the 455....good piece if you respect it's limitations.
