I have an olds motor that has the castiron 3x2 carb set up on it. It also has an od shaped extension on the oil pan.I have been told that this may be a J 71 motor. I am sure the intake is, but how can I tell about the motor itself? Also what do these motors have in the way of high porformance internals etc.? The starter kicks out after a few revolutions making the motor a little hard to start. Will bad flywheel teeth cause this or will a starter rebuild help? Thanks for any help or infomation. MickeyC
It's a 371 with the j-2 manifold option 1957 or 1958- the extra oil filter looking thing on the p*** side is just for extra oil capacity. It does point that the manifold is supposed to be on it but i have yet to see a real do***ented j-2 with the adjustable rockers and bumpy valve covers that is said to exist. But you can find a set of valve covers from time to time and you can get the valve train so you can make one. Just do a search and you will find lots of posts and better experts on the subject- and a few that offer the parts and have multiple examples. good luck, danny
That cast iron J-2 manifold doesn't mean it's definitely a 371. I've got a J-2 manifold on my 324. It was machined down to fit. I've heard that this was a common thing way back when. It probably is though.
Look for a post on Olds engine tech, that should have what you need to find the numbers and decode them.
