Got a set of 10 heads for my build thanks Racer756. My questions are what the biggest valve that can be put in these heads? Will 1.940Int & 1.60Ex fit with hardened seats without hitting water? And second what the biggest lift cam you've run with stock style pistons. I know this is dictated by the valve timing events, but like some feedback. Would like to run Don Wows cam recommendation by Clay Smith grind C-284-8-B . It has a 108 center line --intake -70-46,,,exhaust 70-34 no split--236 @.050 and .530 lift on both sides. Or something similar Will be running a 2x6 Drag Star intake with holley 94s Thanks
I can't speak from personal experience, but from what I've gathered, you should be able to put a 1.94 valve in. The 324 was a factory 3.875" bore, so basically a middle-ground between a SBC 305 (3.736), which would have come with 1.84" valves and a 327/350 with a 4.00" bore, and would have had either 1.94" or 2.02". Coincidentally, the 371 was a 4.00" bore as well, and it is a popular combination to bore the 324 .125" over, take a standard bore 371 slug and get a 345 with a slight bump in compression. I'd imagine you could fit a 2.02" valve in that package, though there is always the possibility of shrouding the valve depending on combustion chamber shape. You might want to talk to Tony at Ross Racing to discuss what his cylinder head package could do for you, since the cost of a big valve conversion would probably be half or more of what a brand new set of heads would cost you and already have the R&D done for you. Just bolt on and go. Also, here is a great video I've posted before of the late John Edwards at Costa Mesa R&D doing a big valve conversion on a set of 324 Olds heads. Not a job for the faint of heart or inexperienced hand. Unfortunately, he does not mention what size valves are going in, though I'm sure you could deduce it with some of the measurements he gives.
