Technical On the fence h.a.m.b dragster

So I'm kinda on the fence about this my off topic drag car is on hold for the time being. I'm kind of thinking about scrou going up some parts to have a little fun car that I could bring to our nostalgia events.

There is Chevy 6 cylinder available here with a 3 speed manual it's either a 230 or 250.

Theres plenty of cheap rear ends available and I have some tubing laying around that is around the right wall thickness for the main frame rails.

Front end is another story a few straight axles to be had but their mostly 50's to 70's type with cast in spring perches and a little wide for my liking.

I guess I'm coming here for ideas and to be talked into it

 

That stuff is all but gone here unfortunately been looking for one for my dually and it's not easy.

 

All but gone,,,,in Canada,,,,,,,,there should be SBC ‘s everywhere up there ?
Chevy small blocks were produced in droves,,,,,,,surely there are many still up there.
Take your time and look carefully,,,,,unless you really prefer a 6 .

He is talking about the old HA/GR class car. No SBC (OHV v8's in general) allowed in this class. Here are the rules for those not familiar:

If you have the parts, the desire, and a place to run and store it I say go for it. Should make for cheap thrills.

 

Not tooting my own horn here but what about a street legal race car clone? This is what I built and I can drive it on the street instead of a few events a year. I built it from parts I had laying around for years. Just a thought.

 

@rusty rocket has a good idea with that. I wonder if you could add a bolt on (external) roll cage to make the car useable at more different types of events and tracks. I'm thinking of the types of cages that the vintage oval track guys run at Bonneville.

In theory you could build a T bucket or similar to be class legal bit still also have it as a street car. Not sure how the rules work on removable cages but there are lots of late model convertibles doing all sorts of racing with bolt in cages.

And if you build the car right, you can race it at any dragstrip in sportsman classes too. You aren't limited to just HAMB or Nostalgia races.

 

If you have a place to race within a reason distance, and other similar cars, it’s a lot of fun.

 

Starting on this when the tubing comes in, I have a Banjo RE and a stock Anglia axle, and going with a 4-banger

Both tracks near me are about 2 1/2 hours away both for both I'd need an NHRA tech able car

 

I mean only thing really stopping me from driving a dragster on the street would be headlights taillights brakes on all 4.wheels and a windshield with a whiper. We can register tube chassis dune nuggets here in Ontario

 

I'm kinda looking for something cheap and fun and simple to throw together l. Need parts for my off topic car that are hard to get right now. Going to grab a model a axle I found this week some time need to put a new vac line on my trans for my truck right now.

 

You might actually be money ahead to convince Marty to build you a chassis minus the bolt on items.
Or find a front engine digger minus the engine and any spendy pieces that you don't need that will pass tech.

Running nostalgia in Ontario is a farce. I have an altered that I built in 1963 and it still runs the 261 Chevy six with three carbs. We had to rebuild the chassis to meet NHRA tech rules but it is still nostalgic in looks and motive power. Nobody in the east runs true nostalgia, even at Thompson, Byron or Beaver Springs. I envy those guys in the NW where there is still a strong representation of nostalgic dragsters/altered's. If the border opens up next year, I want to take the car west and run with like minded people. Camer12009, build your car and I will come down to St Thomas for the ELTA meet and we will have fun.

That's awesome mine will be towed by an OT pickup but.
Anyone know what the rules are on splicing the main hoops on a cage are. my dad has a few cages that are 1 3/4 .188 wall tubing that were cut out of 3 cars including my main drag car would save me a few bucks on having the 2 hoops and shoulder hoop bent by someone else or packing then full of sane and heat bending them

 

Btw love the nostalgia racing at st Thomas unlike modern bracket racing if you get knocked out you can get go back and race with everyone else who got knocked out not having to buy back in ect.

 

Doubt I'd ever make it to eagle field or any other hamb event.

 

I talked to king chassis about making me a fed a few years ago my shoulder span unfortunately doesn't allow for a copy and paste car and would likely result in a square cage no matter what.

 

I'd also like a long wheelbase fed sort of like a 60's early 70's style chassis. I have everything but a good block to make a 351 cleavor.

 

I bent the tube for this car, it's 22 inches at the upper rail.

 

Would nee to be around 26 inches I'm 6ft tall with a 24 inch shoulder span(measured how kings chassis told me) and a fire suit things get tight.

 

Then I would make a 4 inch adjustment on my bend points. Put a C/CS body on it.

 

I'm going to the local scrap yard tomorrow I will see what I can find for tubing for the bottom rails I have plenty of square and rectangular tubing kicking around but not much for round I think I have a piece that will work for the front spring perch though
