Register as a user, then go to The Hokey ass Message Board, introduce yourself, tell us a little bit about yourself, your car, then ask this question there, I'm sure you will get an answer. I cant answer your question or I would here. Sounds like you are working on a car that will fit in here. This area is for comments & questions about the new board, not general questions. Good luck!
It sounds like you are refering to the early Merc type drive assembly which uses a pinion shaft which is quite long and actually forms the drive shaft. There is no way to separate the driveshaft from the pinion gear. It is all one piece. It is possible to cut the shaft and machine splines, but it can be a real difficult machining job. The material is very tough. Your best move might be to obtain the Ford type rearend which uses the coupling. Besides, the one-piece unit like you have is something most collectors would be happy to find. All of those one-piece assemblies, I have seen, came with 3.54 gear ratio.
