I bought some one-shot the other day to try my hand at striping. Well I suck at it. I'll keep practicing. Anyways I bought some Pearlescent grren for the hell of it. It seems to be transparent most of the time, not really good coverage. The white I got works great. Is the green old? or does the pearl colors just not work well?

  2. I think some of that pearlescent stuff is designed to be used over an existing stripe, kinda like spraying Kandy over a base. Try laying down a stripe with white, let it tack up, and go over it with the green. Never hurts to experiment.....

  3. It's good for spraying and that's about all. It looks GREAT sprayed, but it's way too much effort to brush or roll.

ahh ok, well thanks for the info. I'll practice with my can o white paint then. oh while we're on the topic could you guys suggest a good brush to start with? I bought a "pinstriping" brush from a local store, of course it looks nothing like a mack brush, but I was too anxious and bought it anyway. Well it is pretty big at the end, and doesn't like to narrow down to make a clean line.

  5. rev, can you post a pic of the brush? where did you get it? i gave up years ago finding any decent brushes in dallas. i mail order all of mine now.

I've never had any experience with the pearlecent colors, but I think flyin' eye had a good suggestion. Also I would never suggest spraying one shot because it is lead based, and you don't really want that stuff floating around in the air. Mack brushes are great brushes to start out with, excalibers are awesome, but are pricey. I'd start with a couple of macks maybe a 00, and a 0, then if you decide you like it, and want to spend the money, i'd look into getting some excalibers. Keep practicing.

FYI One shot has removed the lead in all the colours as of this year. some colours have been lead free for a couple of years. They are just releaseing some new, two part clears also this month. [IMG] Cheers

I got it at Asel art in Richardson. Near beltline and central. the only thing it's got in common with a mack type brush is that it is tapered. It's a "1/4 Silver Black Velvet 3012S Striper"

Try your local body shop supply shop. I know the ones around me usually carry a few brushes and they're always Mack. If you want a great resource for brushes, call up Q.H.F. in S. Carolina. They'll send you a catalog with anything you'd ever want. Reasonable prices too. 1-800 421-7961

HAHAHA! drdeath is worried about health issues! [IMG] Sorry...that just struck me as funny. Not that I do it EVERYTIME, but, wearing a charcoal-type respirator is a good idea. I'm a little bummed about One-Shot removing the lead. It'll be interesting to see how well it holds up, now. On the upside...now I NEVER have to wear my respirator, right?! [IMG]

Be very careful with the paint. I got some all over my best wilgan and my wife yelled at me a lot.

If it's transparent, that's because all the good stuf has settled to the bottom.
1-Shot Pearls need to be stored upside down,so all the real heavy metalics stick to the lid.
    When you open a can,
you will have to scrape all the metalics and pigments off the lid and stir it real well.

I use 1-Shot Pearls for doing backgrounds, finished off a couple cans yesterday. They will flow out flat, but will always show brush marks unless sprayed. They work well for plastic bagging.
You can get some interesting effects by dripping solvent on 1-Shot Pearls,I use 1-Shot Low Temperature Reducer for this to speed drying time.

1-Shot pearls can be mixed together to create new colors.1-Shot Yellow Pearl is terrible,I like the Purple and Blue.Small amounts of Black or White can be added to change the shade of the Pearls, too much will lose the Pearl effect and screw up drying time due to the chemistry involved.Follow the instructions on the can for reducing.

That 1/4" mystery brush is probably too big to make a real thin line.
    Get a Mack Series 20 from: www.mackbrush.com OR www.pinstriper.com

  13. The 1-Shot pearls can be successfully brushed but I wouldn't recommend them if you are just starting out.I usually store them upside down and rotate them every month or so.Helps the pigment settling problem. There are certain pearl colors that will defy brushing;red and yellow come to mind.I've had good luck with the process blue and blue green and marginal success with the purple. You have to stir them almost constantly to keep the particles in suspension. One of the reasons I don't like using any of 1-Shot's metallic colors or anyone else's for that matter. The best metallic gold I ever found was made for BMW motorcycles and was a gold powder supplied with a clear binder.Worked well for striping motorcycles that needed a stripe.Didn't need to be cleared afterwards but dried really fast and you couldn't pull a line much longer than a couple of feet without reloading the brush.Nice consistency though and didn't go out of suspension real fast.A friend of mine owned a BMW motorcycle dealership and supplied me with it to do some bikes for him.All the words were in German so I assume it was never really made for export.I think it was made by Glasurit.
I have never had any luck with long handled stripers like that.I have some Scharfs that I bought probably 30 years ago and I think I used one of them once or twice.Great straight line stripers but couldn't make a curve to save my life. They're parked right next to all my old Grumbacher 1010's.
If you're having problems finding a Mack brush dealer in your area, check their website;I think they can tell you where your nearest dealer is.Or just buy them direct. They ship anywhere and they are great people to deal with.Unlike a lot of businesses, they actually CARE about their customers.

  14. Cool tips, Unkl Ian! Can't wait to try some effects. Here's one I stumbled on (it works great for weirdo faces and odd lettering)...paint the face or lettering with the one shot. I usually mask, cut and roller or foam brush for this effect. While it's drying (flat), but still tacky, mist some water over it. Mist the water until it forms small, pea size drops on the painted are. Let it dry like this. The water drops will disappear and leave small craters behind! Gives a real nice, creepy, bad complexion look to the subject. Make sense? I've used this on MDO cut outs of things like Frankenstein's monster, weirdos, shrunken heads and tongues.

My drunken uncle and his stupid father inlaw did that same effect to a whole car once,
    but not on purpose. [IMG]
The painted it with lots of house paint, rollers, and big brushes.
Of course it rained before it was dry,and then the sun came out.
Where ever the water had beaded up was sunken down and glossy, the rest was flat.
It looked like Baby Blue Alligator skin. [IMG]

  17. Some of the coolest things happen when things get screwed up. [IMG] That woulda been real hip if he had painted the car green or brown...he coulda had one of those "art cars".
