one wire alts

  1. Nnnnope!

I just know better than that! ;)

    Why? You into billet? :D

  2. No, I am am not into billet in the least. But, I have had a "one wire alternator" on my car for about 20 years, with no problems. I now know that they may not be the best way to go. I am curious though why you seem to have such strong negative feelings toward them. Have you had a bad experience with one that you would like to share with us? If not maybe you can tell us why you have to resort to name calling when discussing something that for the rest of us is pretty emotionless.

  3. This is stupid but..... What name did I call you?

However, you are the one that made this statement towards me. V V V

Did I say anything after your statement? No!

I mearly answered your question and countered.

As with most things there is a good way to do things and then there is a best way. I think given the opportunity most people would choose to do it in a way that offers the most advantage and in the long run will yield the best results. As it turns out that might not always be the easy way. Yes the one wire alternator will do the job and yes it simplifies the process but that does not mean it is the best way to do the job. I don't think anyone should take offense when these points are being made and a little humor is interjected. Chill out man.

  5. You have a 1 wire that works, good for you. I know countless people that had it and went back to the system as it was intended and designed to be used.

I still haven't received an answer as to why GM or any other manufacturer won't use a one wire system. My money is on that they know something the 1 wire people won't listen to.

And that my friends is why the debate goes on!

    Now it's time for POPCORN!

I am suprised that so many are talking about how you have to "rev up" a one wire alternator to get it to charge. Though I haven't done any lately I have installed a few kits I bought from my local alternator-starter rebuilder that will energize the 1 wire alt. at idle, my customers loved that setup. I f anyone is interested in one of these kits P.M. me and I'll give my guy a call to see if he still has them. I do remember they were fairly cheap too! Normal Norman

I'm not a "billet head" and have had a one wire on my truck since 1994 and one on the t-bucket since 2007 and one on the Henry J since 2010. I have absolutely had not ONE problem with them. I too think you were beat up by a one wire....lol

Engine idle speed and alternator drive ratio are both factors. Maybe somne alternators are bettter than others about this, I don't know. People who install one wire alternators on old tractors routinely encounter the rev to energize situation.

I am doing a 12 volt conversion and looking for an alternator... The auto parts store guy is telling me that the wilson they carry is a two wire, but all I see is one stud and the female connector for the DA plug. Is this considered two wire? I'm also looking at the 10SI 3-wire 63 amp alt. on ebay and they are labeled for marine or farm and tractor use. Would this work fine in a car? If anyone could recommend a fairly inexpensive alternator that is not a one wire, I would really appreciate it... Thanks!

man, that was informative. is there a way to save that offline?.... I spose a bookmark will work too, but I like to keep things on the computer.

thanks for posting that link, Skip.

BTW, the MAD article focused on GM and some Ford, what about MOPAR; is the 3-wire, remote voltage sensing setup "standard" for them too?

What AMP rating would take care of a car that would have the electrical goodies they talked about; radiator fan(s), power windows, power seats, A/C, lights (not halogen) and a decent sound system. I don't plan on getting crazy with accessories, but would like alot of the same amenities as a new car.
They talked about 65amp, and 140amp, is there a 100amp?
Would one of those fit the bill?

    thnx,
    gatz
