Actually I think its three words, who knows. Anyway yes I was rebuilding the 4 deuce setup that will be going on top of my next big block chevy project, which is a 58 Impala. As you can see I have a few more things to do but I think you get the picture. Satin

lookin good!

I like your choice of air cleaners, who made them?

I played around with several different setups and setled on the lttle louvered jobs with K&N filters.. for the street anyways.

keep us posted!

Hi Paul. Yeah those are the original ones with cross over tops. I doubt I will be able to find filters that will fit them, but I'll try first, otherwise I will be making my own. Satin

Yeah I like the air cleaners too are they motorcycle elements? Nice looking set up! They look a lot like these. I found out later that they are for a Harley I think.

Sweet! I've got a weak spot for multi-carb setups. Looks good too... are you leaving the carbs natural, or painting them red like the bases?

Hi Tommy, yeah that screening seems to be used on alot of different applications, apparently been around for years. Those were the originals built by man-a-fre

Mojo, hows it going? Carbs will be as you see them. They are the original carbs that were installed by man-a-fre, 58 pontiac large base rochesters. They will remain as is, surprisingly they still look good with there original cad finish.

thats a super looking set up,but i understand that the man-a-fre's are almost impossible
to run on the street.the problem is there is no plenum for balance .each carb supplies 2
cylinders only and they are a bear to set up.the coupe in american graffiti only used the
man-a fre set up for still shots because no one could get the car to run.the info i have is
for the mouse motor manifold but the rat man-a-fre is proably the same design.maybe somebody
on the board has more info. on this.if you are interested,i could you in touch with a friend
of mine who is building a graffiti coupe clone.he is not using his man-a fre manifold because
of the above stated problems.sorry for the wet blanket but i thought i should point it out.

Get a UNi-Syn to help tune the carbs. There are three on Egay now.

Don't forget to make sure the 2 little equilizer (sp) tubes are clean.

The four carbs look great but will never preform like a 4 barrel.

The original jets from man-a-fre are worth their weight in gold.

I ran a Mam-a-fre on the street for a few weeks in the 70's. I got it all balanced and tuned. a PITA but doable. The problem is that it is SOOOOOO responsive that it's no fun to drive. When you just barely tip in 4 Rochesters you get a lot of air/fuel mixture and a kick in the ass. That part is fun until you get into town with stop lights and other cars on the street. (real world)It's very hard to feather the throttle and clutch in my case. Maybe an automatic with a high stall converter and a 2 foot driver could controll it but it wasn't fun for me. Good luck

I got mine used and didn't come with air cleaners.

Hey Tommy I see the problem. You were running a MAM-a-fre. That definetly isnt good for the street, the female version is uncontrollable and should never be expected to drive with others around, LOL

There are a few of us HAMBsters running the Man-A-Fre,

but I think Satinblack and myself have the only big block setups.

I also think part of being a true hot rodder is beating your head against a wall.

If it's too easy, it just aint as much fun, ya know?

I had my doubts when I put my setup together, and it did take a little tweeking,

but driving it is like nothing I've ever driven before!

the throttle response is instant and constant, there is no lag

like every other manifold I've driven especialy the tunnel rams I like so much.

I can't wait to see what it's like on the strip!

here's a pic of mine the day it went on..

and one with it running..

damn, starphoto is slow today, I'll get another up in a little bit..

Paul

ok..here..

it's a 454 .040 over,

I am running 074 heads with 2.19 and 1.88 valves,

a relatively mild cam, slight lope, don't remember the specs right now,

a 2500 stall converter, B&M prepped T400 and 3.70 trac-loc rear with 10" slicks,

it is very easy to drive.

Since 60's mentioned it. I was wondering who else out there is running a man-a-fre? Be good to get some other inputs on tuning and such

Also invest into a tool called "Colour Tune"! [IMG]

This can be found in Hemmings and in British Car magazines. [IMG]

Takes the guesswork out of your mixture settings and should give you performance better than a four barrel carb! [IMG] [IMG]

And..., If it has Tits, Tires, or Propellers..., sooner or later it'll give you "Problems"...!! [IMG] "Oh Yeah" [IMG]

FWIW this was a lot easier for ME to use. I bought it just to syncronize the Man-A-fre.

Small block Chevy Man-A-Fre's seem to be plentiful, as far as rare intakes go,...then the big block versions. A guy in our area who specializes in rare and vintage induction set- up's has one for a small block Ford, and, one for a Pontiac!, (which another buddy just bought from him---BIG $$$),...which I never knew they made. Anyone have a catalog with other applications?

Yes they made them, but I believe that all the applications they did.

on the copy of a copy of a catalog that's been circulating for awhile is hand written;

6 cyl. catalog avail. on request-

The big and little Chevys are listed as well as the small Ford but not the Poncho.

I have never seen one and didn't know they existed..

My only problem with the Man-A-Fre design is

that it is not as showy as say a 671 with dual quads, or even a tunnel ram.

Why the whole deal is so short, you might not see it at all if yer not lookin right at it!

I have saw an advertisement that showed ram tubes for them. Has anyone ever saw a set of them? I haven't ever. I rarely see man a fre's for sale at any show. I'll see if I can find the advertisement. The were angled at like 45 degrees and sat on top of the carbs. they were smaller at the end the air went in
