  1. Thank you, if I get stuck I’ll reach out for sure. My shop had single phase, but I’m running several pieces of 3 phase equipment with VFD units

I know you’ll find the answer. I’m posting for others reading as well that do not understand US vs Euro/UK service.

Cheater imports and Cheater exports may be able to help you. They are are family company. One is in the Indianapolis area and the other is in Lilydale Victoria Australia about half an hour from the Melbourne branch of Hare and Forbes. From memory Kevin (an old Hot Rodder) is the Indianapolis end.

Not quite. Power distribution is 3 phase, high voltage. Most of the power lines into the neighborhoods are single phase. 3 phase is more common in heavy industrial areas or large agriculture facilities.

About 40 years ago, I worked on a large military communications test. One of my jobs was to find radio sites with 3 phase power available (the alternative was to bring in a military crew with 3 phase generators to run 24 hours a day). If the power poles had only one transformer, the communications site had single phase. Three transformers indicated 3 phase.

And the voltage available is a little different. My memory is a bit hazy after all these years. With a little help from a Google search, the common lower 3 phase voltages are:

"A common supply voltage is 120V/208V 3 phase Wye configuration. 120 volts is measured from each phase to neutral voltage (neutral wire is center-tapped) and 208 volts is measured phase to phase. Wye configuration is commonly used to supply 3 phase 4 wire service entrances, such as commercial buildings."

    and

"A circuit powered by a three-phase power source is called a three-phase circuit. U, V, W are called three-phase, and the voltage between the phases is the line voltage, and the voltage is 380V. The phase voltage between the phase and the center line is called the phase voltage, and the voltage is 220V."

    and
"A standard three-phase power supply in the U.S. has a voltage rating of 480 V. This voltage drops to 460 V due to line losses before being supplied to connected three-phase electrical equipment."

Just do what all us overseas guys have to do when buying parts and cars ex USA. Organise the freight yourself and get it dropped off at the freight forwarder.

  6. What trailer trash Too said, almost no housing has 3 phase 220, it's an industrial area thing. My house is one of the rare exceptions, but it was the builder's personal house for the housing tract, and is on the edge of a commercially zoned area. I have to differ from what he said though, and I'm certainly no electrician, but 3 phase 220 I thought meant they'd be TWO transformers on the utility pole instead of the normal one transformer.

One transformer for each phase. The phases are 120 degrees apart (note: There are 360 degrees in a cycle).

  9. While there has been dozens of different transformer connections used over the years for various utilization voltages in the US, in terms of three phase pretty much all you'll find anymore is 120/208 or 277/480 Wye (AKA 'star') connections. Dual-voltage Delta three phase connections used to be fairly common but have fell out of favor with the utilities because of the inability to load balance due to the impossibility of deriving 3 phase in the lower voltage, all you can get is single-phase. I'm not saying Delta connections no longer exist, just that they're rare and usually location-specific, primarily industrial locations using customer-owned transformers. Most you'll run into will be single voltage systems in the 460-480V range or rarely a 220-240. I have never seen a 250V utility supply. It used to be common for most motors to accept a +/- 10% voltage range, some newer ones are down to 5%, that may be an issue.

None of this is insurmountable as Vicky has said, it just takes some skull sweat. I would pay a bit extra attention to the difference in the grounded/grounding conductors, maybe a GFCI breaker will be a good idea. Using an odd-ball plug and cap would be a good idea also, wouldn't want to smoke something by plugging it into that outlet...

  10. When it finally gets here what color do you think I should paint it?

I wouldn’t paint it. I’d leave the shipping dust on it and open a new thread called “crate dust find”.
Now some will tell you to clean it, some will tell you to leave it alone.
Only you can make that decision.

SEMA is coming up the first of November, maybe you could find someone who might have one on display that you could buy? Not sure where you live but Las Vegas is closer then Austrailia, Or possibly have it sent over with someone elses display,it is unreal the stuff that is at SEMA,there are a lot of deals made on display items there on the last day.Might be worth a try. harvey

  23. Spooky, only last night I was going through old emails deleting them...including my ones to Hare &Forbes on your behalf. Weird timing.

    Hope it works out.

Never mind that machinery thing, is that a Judge rag top?

  26. We’ve already talked about that.
One was supposed to got thru mecum , what did it bring

  27. Just saw this thread.....glad you were able to get the Power Hammer imported. I'm genuinely surprised that there isn't a comparable local product.

All of us overseas HAMBers know the "don't ship outside the US" deal too well....so we feel your pain.
