    What did i miss. So I got my 351w wired with a momentary switch to get it running. I push the button and it fires up then I let go of the switch then it immediately dies.
    If I hold the button down it'll keep ruining but wouldn't that keep the starter tuning?
    Any ideas???

    we can't see how you wired it, so it's hard to say. We can make a few guesses, but then it's a guessing game.

    draw a schematic or take some pictures or describe what is connected to what.

    sounds like there's no connection from the battery to the coil positive terminal...which is what an ignition switch does when you turn it to "run" position

  3. You need a hot from the battery to the coil and a way to start it. That’s it. (At least that’s how I’m driving my MB right now..)

    The blue wire goes to the + on the coil and the red wire goes to the duraspark box

    The blue wire to the coil is connected to the I terminal on the relay, which is only energized while the engine is cranking. You also need a wire from the battery positive (through a ballast resistor) to the coil positive terminal, to make it keep running.

    thanks for the picture!

    Ford 4-Terminal Solenoid Wiring.jpg

    Simple.

    Igntion switch just needs to be wired in.
    Start = momentary
    Run = On
    Stop = Off

    Red wire from the momentary switch? That should go to the solenoid as
    @MAD MIKE described so it's just like the momentary ignition switch spring loaded twist to START.
    Connect the coil wire and the duraspark box to a on/off switch to mimic the ignition switch ON position.
    I have now described how to hot wire a car to hooligans around the globe. :eek:
    A ballast would be nice in the coil lead. Read the other instructions.

    I think I get it now. The I terminal is to get it started and I need itt wired from the battery to a ballast to the coil.
    But hey I got it to start with not much effort so I count that as a win

    Yeah but your going to need it, the battery wire to coil, to go thru ignition switch or you won't be able to turn the motor off....

    Just make sure it’s switched power. Unless running for a short time and then disconnecting it

    My ‘42 Ford PU didn’t have an ignition switch with it.
    What I did was similar. I dug up an on/off key switch, and used a momentary push button. The key switch was to the ballast resistor then to the coil, momentary went straight to the coil. I had converted it to 12 volts, just used what I had.

    I'm just rigging it up to hear it run and maybe set the timing.

    Then you need just an on/off switch. Toggle is fine to the ballast, the momentary to start as you have it now.
