I used to work on MU2`s,the engine fit in the nacell was way too tight for most American hands.Plus you couldn`t reach anything from the ground, had to stand on something.

  2. I have no idea. I would've asked, but it's a terrible picture. I'll look at some pics of old Iron Dukes to see if they ring a bell.

  3. I called the yard and was told someone offered them $1800 for it and is picking it up in a few days or something. "Make me a decent offer", come today and it's yours. Sorry, no can do.

  4. Sarge,

Don't know about the Opel 4, but your pic in post #19 is a dead ringer for a Chevy II 4

That picture is definitely not a CIH Opel engine, you didn't miss out.

Thanks for the bump for my ads on Dogfight! :D

  6. Actually Datsun copied the XPAG motor, which was the 1250 from the TA/TB/TC/TD line.

That's a nice little car. Nothing that clean (as a project) this side of the Mississippi...

Years ago a coworker pulled his Kadett Rally into the shop after hours to work on the exhaust. He put it up on the hoist and in the next stall, also up in the air, was a Chevette. From the firewall back you could hardly tell them apart. Same rear suspension, same odd rear axle with a short "torque tube" extension on the pinion, even the floor pans if I remember correctly.

I'v had experance with a few Opals. A Kadett with the lillle push rod 1100. Gutless but it likes to rev. A GT that dropped a valve seat, you can imigin the results. And a really sweet Manta for a short while... made money on that one.

The Kadett Rally I mentioned above also had the 1.1 litre engine in it. The owner found a dual carb and intake setup, maybe from a GT, that he installed on his Kadett. I asked him if it was worth all the effort and he said he didn't think it was any faster, and his fuel mileage dropped off a little bit, but at least it was harder to start!

I tried to buy one back in 79,it was a 69 that the guy bought new but parked it in the driveway in 73 due to a heater problem but would not sell it so it sat there another year or two then dissapeared.

this is a Opel 1.9 motor.
if you compare the two you'll see the dizzy are on opposite sides.

2 completely different breeds of 4 cylinders.
But after owning about 10 or so of them little German cars I would hope I would now what a 1.1 or 1.9 looks like. I loved my 68 Kadet w/the dual carb 1.1 & the wife's 70 wagon w/a 1.9 w/a cam & racing clutch. That little wagon could & would fly.

But for $1800 even for a 153 Iron Duke I'd have to want it an awful bad & have money I wanted to waste. ..joe

1800 seens pretty high.i have owned 5 of them and never paid more than $250 for them.for that kind of money they should be running-driving.UNLESS its a 69.if im not mistaking there were only a hand full shipped to the states and are very sought after.

I'll throw you a real curve-ball here, and it's on-topic! I know a guy in Germany who used to race Opels and also loved '58-'66 T-birds. In the mid-'80s he took an Opel inline 6 and fit it into a '64 T-bird Landau. With 4.11:1 rear gearing and the engine hopped up to racing specs it could do pretty well cruising around the country. Plus, because of the way the Germans tax cars by displacement and axle weight, it cost him less to license the car, and you can imagine how many marks/litre he saved on gas.

  19. Hell yeah. Save it. My first car was a 71 Opel Manta followed by a 74 Opel Wagon. Great running little car but coulda used a 5th gear for highway use

Sgt started this Thread to get some Info about Opel Engines for a possible Hot Rod Project.

But it has deteriorated into a Thread about O/T Opels.
