Technical Open banjo conversion leaking

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 46international, Nov 24, 2014.

  1. I built my own "open" conversion for a 48 banjo rear and the pinon seal keeps leaking. what looks like the problem is that the splined adapter that I used to mount the yoke has too much play on the splines of the pinion shaft. This play is letting oil leak past the seal, any ideas on how to tighten up the splines and keep the yoke centered in the seal housing?

We made a dummy alignment tool due maybe to my ineptness to be able to get the seal 100% centred and it kept on leaking. Once we installed a new seal again with this tool we are leak free.

Get (or make) a different yoke that doesn't move on the splines. If it's enough to wiggle it is also enough to wear. Eventually it will come apart and you will be sorry.

  4. The spline adapter that I'm using came from Mac's or Speedway, i don't know where I can get one that would fit tighter.
Kiwi4d, I like that idea, I guess you put the "tool" in place of the seal so that it centers the housing on the yoke before tightening the bolts. That may work but the spline still has some play, guess just making sure the seal is centered may be enough.

Maybe the splines on your pinion are worn?

  6. well, they did not look too worn, sure there is some. and I'm not talking about alot of slop but it does move a little.
maybe if i could find a sealed bearing that would hold it straight and seal the oil.
