Open Drive Conversion Kit

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by jamesey138, May 19, 2005.

  1. does anyone have this kit a little more reasonable than speedway???

keeps your '32-'48 Ford rear end intact and run a normal driveshaft.

I bought one from Speedway, had my toolmaker dad copy it (not exactly, he made some revisions) and sent it back.

I have been working on this for a couple of months now. The problem seems to be the 8 spline 1 1/4 shaft on the rear end.

I have tried thru drive line shops and farm and industrial equipment supplier's but the 8 spline slip yoke seems to be non-existant.My guess is Speedway is having someone with a CNC machine build them just for them.
There are 8 spline yoke's but they do not have a very long seal surface. The seal adapter would need to be as long as the splines or the splines could be cut off.The other problem is the U-joint would have to be assembled under the car as these do not have u-bolts.

I will try to bore a flange and insert the original piece that runs over the splines and weld it ,using the original outer tube to hold a seal but I'm not sure if it will work.
    anybody got another way?

The Hot Rod Works makes them. Same price as Speedway. They make an adapter. Goes form the 8 spline to their yoke. Got one one on my '26 Mod, works great.

  8. it will , and has worked ,i have done it myself using a yoke from a 8" ford rear.... smokey's post is way to do it

oh yeah , i think you mean 6 spline

use the splined piece that came out of the closed rear at the end of the driveshaft.

because i need a 3ft long drive shaft. building a short T-bucket. i would love to use a tork tube but don't think i can get one 3 or 4ft long if i can then that would be cool. let me know if some one or some how i can shorten a inner shaft. i know i can do the tube but the inner i can't seem to think how.

Have one end resplined, just like an axle shaft might be. Or just weld the coupler on the back to the shortened shaft.

I remembered this post from awhile back.

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=34555&page=1&pp=20

They seemed to do it with out too much trouble, and I bet it was alot cheaper and easier than converting both the trans and rear. Hope this'll help ya out a bit

(i will be running a stock motor and trany not a lot of HP or tork there mite be o.k to weld?)

I think that would be the better way to go.
either that or find an open banjo truck to rob both the transmission and rear from.

so do you think i could get away with welding the two? (i know a bit about welding done it a few times wink wink)
just not to sure about the tork that would be put on the weld. oh by the way i will be building & giving the T to my wife for her B-Day Aug 18 so i know it will never be ran hard.

how hard is it to find? hmmm.... compared to?

you are right they are not easily found, but they are out there.
that one was found at a local swap meet, cheap, but should get a new ring and pinion before gobs of torque are applied.

I would not weld the drive shaft,
someone should be able to tell you what the constant diameter shafts are in, or from.

I am using a Studebaker motor and transmission in that one.. at least that was the plan,, it'll be an open transmission regardless.
