There are custom car builders in Australia who can build way more slytlish & better finished custom than this.So dont hold this car against other Aussie custom car builders. It was awarded America's most beautiful custom,(in the eye's of the judges,to bad they had vision distorting lenses ,LOL),not America's best custom.
Every day I deal with folk who've made big, made good. Some of us can only dream of big scores and what we could do with it and some get it all the time. Some hit the mark, or miss it, in once in a liftime scenarios. Although this is coming from someone who has 3 current projects that aren't for sale at any price, I think you might be well served to make it happen. Apparently money is not an issue for this new customer that you CLEARLY have the opportunity to land for your shop. I could be harsh and say what the fuck are you worried about, well maybe that's not so harsh afterall. You're on a public forum asking advice, asking on a site he may very well know and participate in but you don't know it. There's a hundred ways to fuck this deal up. This could be one of em. So further to asking for comments and opinions here's mine...SELL THE FUCKIN THING!!! Be fair, professional, honest and add the covenant that YOU finish the car in HIS colors to the same design and quality that you started out to do. His colors make it his car. Your work brings you more work because it gets done and out there. You make money. He's not the only person he knows that plays with these things and has the funds to go all out, but the community 'up there' is small and EXCLUSIVE. Do you wish to play along and have a measure of financial security or be a tough guy and brag about keeping a car that maybe some day wouldn't bring 1/2 of your investment because you're short the $$$$ to get it to the top? Can you SPEND what it takes to make an icon? He can. So can his friends and associates. Also consider that those who've made good didn't get there by being stupid. Well, 99.99% of em didn't. Keep that in mind as you price your project and enjoy what you've been dreaming about behind the welding helmet. All those "I wish I could" ideas might have a chance after this. The last advice I can give you is to treat the guy as you would any other enthusiast. Share the build often. Support the goals and get ready to build more in the future. I read one comment here that says "...not there to make friends..." well that's bullshit. All of these things are personal property that requires trust and confidence on behalf of both parties. You know, like the basis of a good friendship. In my world I can take a paraphrase from Packard (Every Customer a Salesman) and add every customer a friend. It gets a bit overwhelming at xmas parties but WTF that's only once a year. OK? Got it? Did you close? What are you building next?
this guy must be on crack himself. i can't believe he has let you talk to him that way twice, and then wants to throw money at you too. take his money and run,he may come to his senses. if you had talked to me that way,you might be picking yourself off the floor. very unprofessional. -danny
I would start putting numbers out there to find out how high he will go and sell it to him at that price. Sounds like you can get a lot more than it is worth from him for that car and he obviously sees the work you are doing and REALLY likes it. Don't give in easily, make him WORK for it since it seems he likes that game. Then, with the money you made from it I'd buy YOUR car even better than the one you sold him. Just think about winning the lottery. You buy a tickets all the time hoping one of them will hit it big. Customers like this are like winning the lottery. He keeps coming back even though you have NOT treated him all that well and he thinks that if he throws a silly amount of money at you he wins. Sooo, let him win and take a win for yourself from it too. I just love the reaction to my comment on this car. That Mercury with the oversize chrome rims that has the trunk filled with high powered amps and every bit of "bling" ever conceived certainly qualifies as a "PIMPED" ride by any standard. Too bad it offends the South Africans and the Australians by pointing it out, get over it!!!!!! There is no crying in hot rodding......... regards, DJ
Hmmm... are you sure this Jerkules is actually the owner of Mercules? The people I know with money don't blow off appointments like that, their time is too valuable. They also got their money by being respectful of others (in most cases). Maybe this dude doesn't have a pot to piss in and is just another tire kicker. Just kind of sounds fishy and out of character for someone so well to do... know what I mean? Yes, of course there are rich assholes too!
Same story different name, different car, good year-year and a half ago. He dropped the car off yesterday to get started w/the prefitting and paint to follow. Hope your ending is the same.
The guy is sounding worse by the post that I am now thinking that maybe you were too NICE to him! regards, DJ
Check this thread... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=292380&highlight=fantac&showall=1 And these photos... http://good-times.webshots.com/album/569722207bngHZL
Rick, Really...just sell him the merc you can make another one you have build so many you could prob do it in your sleep!!! and you should name the car Jerkules for sure!
Before this Thread, I was blissfully unaware there was such a thing as a Mercules.... Why do people take the uglyest part of a Mercedes, and put them on other cars?
I think this should all be decided with a winner-take-all radical Mercury custom "goofy name"-off. Looks like the potential customer as well as the potential builder have a pretty strong chance at the gold. But seriously, good luck with whatever you decide to do.
Would not be radical to put 51 Mercury lights on it now, would it!!! Maybe lights off landing gear of a 747 do it for you....
Yeah, its radical... ( actually, the Sniper was. And this is just more of the same ) But it doesn't look good.
Hey, I hate the thing. It's an embarassment to anyone who loves custom Mercs. And Because of where I live, I hated it before you. So there.
Come to think of it, ya, sure is a lot like Sniper, both with v10 in them...another name game for Kevin....ahahah Neither car is my cup o tea, but i am not into the whole radical show car thing...however as such, it is as good...
I've heard that the Sniper ( as ugly as it was ) had really amazing details and workman ship. I bet this car is the same, and I respect that part of it. But like you said... not my cup of tea. ( if I even liked tea )
That may be, but I have read a bunch of Jack Kerouac books and have Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie records. Thankfully I don't have a gay arse. I hope.
Jeeze it must be nice to be independently wealthy and not have to reply on your BUSINESS to feed your family. The POTENTIAL CUSTOMER didn't ask you to build another monstrosity he told you what he wanted in ANOTHER car that you would build if it met your high standards. Your high standards forced away a guy with deep pockets that wanted to spend some of his money at your shop in this time of a VERY BAD economy. What a good deal you kept to your standards and lost a valuable monetary injection of capital to your business. Is it worth it do you have enough money to ignore a chance to make more?
pay to play? thats not playing fair! burnt fingers and pizza are the name of the game.bright and shinnies have helped ruin the family!that's all i'm sayen.
