I not nearly as bothered by the SBC transplant....they rip... I am disgusted by the fact that NEWB here either KNOWs this motor is fucked and is still trying to get top dollar for it... or They are just to damn lazy to tear into and check.... What gives...."DUDE"...cause I am paying attention.
lazy? dude, can you not bloody well see the magnitude of effort it's going to take just getting the body sorted? Maybe they don't wanna have to deal with tearing down an engine only to find it's beyond saving? And if you can sell that lump for top dollar, great! And it's THEIR car dude, they can throw what ever their hearts desire under the hood. lazy? Chit, I'm frigging wore out just looking a the pic's of them getting the beast out of the shed.
The ad for the Olds motor said $2k/obo. OBO means "OR BEST OFFER". The motor is pretty unique, being all factory original with the complete drive train as well as the rear axle assembly. If you want it, make me an offer, and come on down to Columbus to pick it up, because we are not going to ship it anywhere. I have been asked for parts, and I will part it out. Tell me what you want, we can work something out.
Hey, did I mention MAKE ME AN OFFER? If nobody wants this thing, it's going to get recycled. Then you can bitch about that.
Neat find! Curious on what you are saying about the Olds-why would the time needed to tear it down hinder it's use compared to the time needed to bring the whole car back to life considering all that will be required to do so? Not a slam on the sbc choice at all just wondering about the teardown issue. Is it THAT rusty from sitting in a closed garage?
Until somebody wants to get a set of wrenches and a hoist, who knows? There was enough moisture to eat out the floor of the car, and when it rains in Ohio on a hot day, the humidity can be just as brutal as any place down south. Dave passes on the motor, I put it up for sale, and look what happens. Anything can be restored with enough money and time. Does anyone here want to tackle it?
Hey Andy , Thanks for being a stand up guy and doing what you did for your friend. I wish I knew more people like you! AND TO EVERYONE ELSE, As far as the motor goes, ITS UP TO DAVE ABOUT THE SBC...NOT Andy............. About selling the OLDS motor , We all was taught to start at a high price ,YOU CAN ALWAYS LOWER YOUR PRICE ,You can't go back up on the price...PLUS its for the motor ,trans , and rear end........ For the restorer it maybe a good deal maybe not ! Only my two cents and we all know whats thats worth! THANKS Andy for the post and your time to inform us...
hahaha....calm down guy. Your all over the place here... First its "TOAST" Then its "PRETTY UNIQUE" but still "TOAST" Now..."WHO KNOWS" cause no-ones tried. then your willing to part it, but its going to the scrapper.... and you still never answed my question... How do YOU know what YOU know...the answer is YOU dont...YOU listened to someone else who didnt take the time to check....Lazy.
Andy, If you do end up just scrapping that motor please let me know the scrap price. I'm in Columbus as well and will most likely try to save it from the scrap heap. If your friend is interested in seeing what the motor condition is before building it with the SBC and the labor is the problem, I'd be willing to donate my labor to tear it appart for him to see how bad it truly is. Crazy as it may seem, I actually enjoy the challenge of taking something like that apart and would be proud to add what little I could to the history of that car. Jack
Thats not crazy Jax2A.... Thats HOTRODDING.... Not asking for you to agree with me.... But its a shame YOU didnt get this...if its the same car.
Then why not start with an asking price close to scrap price. no one in their right mind is going to give a "best offer" even close to $2k. if thats true, i guess next time i sell my vehicle i will price it 10x higher than its value and hope for a OBO.
I'm not quite sure why everyone's getting bent out of shape on the SBC, it's just an engine. So the car gets built because the guy has the engine already, so he can spend time and money to save THE CAR! Hell a motor and tranny can be changed any time, after THE CAR is saved. It's not a big deal to change an engine and tranny later on. He's clearly got a lot of work ahead of him, and an expensive and time consuming engine rebuild could really be the thing to bog the whole build, till it never gets done. Do what you gotta do to get THE CAR built. Besides, judging by the current "trend" a SBC might turn out to be a very unique engine in a few years. But please, keep the car traditional, and that's easy to do with a SBC, no matter what some may think.
great save check out the deuce site and bring it down for the deuce run when ya get it going I have to agree on the hatred on sbc`s deuceslimited.com
LOL, I love it. Don't get me wrong here, I'm NOT ripping on anyone. But I still can't help but see the irony in the way this thread turned out. Guy finds the holy grail of hotrodding (32-3W) and is too busy with his camaro to even try and score it even if it is only to flip it and make a couple of grand for finding it. So he passes it to his buddy who passes on the rusty lump of an engine sitting beside the grail. But now the original discoverer of the 32 wants top dollar for the left over rusty parts that the "buddy" didn't even want to drag home. Priceless.
Andy, First thanks for notifying us about the find and for the effort of taking all of the pictures and posting them and letting us enjoy the experience vicariously. If it was mine I might have made some different decisions about how it is finished but it's not, so I'll keep my mouth shut. The important thing is that it went to someone who has the resources to bring it back to something nice. His money, his decision. A lot of what you are hearing is simple jealousy. Not surprising.
Fellas, please allow me to clarify a few things. 1. Ed told me to list it for $2k. As it was mentioned here, why leave money on the table. As a Camaro guy, how would I even guess what it's worth. 2. Dave has a 283 Chevy with a tri-power set up for this car. I am truely sorry that I called it an SBC. (FNG) 3. If I don't know what something is worth, and nobody wants to make me an offer, should Ed just leave it in his garage, or scrap it? When I asked what it was worth back in march, I got no response. Jax, let me talk to Ed about that. I don't think Dave is going to change his plans, and he is way to busy to jump into this discussion. All I just want to do is document this story. I don't mind your opinions, but I am not smoking crack, all my meds are perscription. This has been a hoot, just reading what you guys have to say. Try to consider that if I hadn't been friends with Dave, this thig would still be in Ed's garage.
Check out Dave's website. Look at the past projects, like the '31 Ford 5 window. http://www.classicresurrection.com/
Andy-I hope I didn't sound like I was ripping you of your friends choice of engine - I wasn't. I just didn't understand the comment about taking too much time to tear down the Olds. It almost sounded like this was the primary reason for not using it. Having just torn down 2 very rusty Buicks (401,425) to find a good one for the Riv I know it will take a lot longer to get that body and chassis together than to tear down an engine. Just my .02. Like I said it's an excellent score!
Great story , Tri power 283 is cool , just hope he uses the original artillary wheels to keep the true spirit of the car that was put away 50 yrs ago , full fendered with the stock hood it will look killer. Thanks for the documentation of the removal , very inspiring.
A period built 283 with tri-power is much more acceptable to me at least. I know I was envisioning a fuel injected crate motor with too much chrome/billet and an A/C compressor hanging off of it.
Andy, quit wasting your time "explaining" Some folks are not going to accept any explaination, it's all about "I would do this or I would have done that" who gives a RA. Dave is the captain on this so save your energy and post more on the project as it moves along with pics, please. This is a great story and I think we all want to see this project as it moves forward. A big "thumbs up"
There is no turning back know! I was in the same boat when i bought two 35 Ford coupes. Once you make the deal all you can do is swallow and move on. Tahnk God for patch panels! Cool story!
I took all of the photos in this thread. That is Dave McGaffe, the proud new owner. I take a lot of pictures, so there are not many of me posted online. Most folks would rather see the cars.
