Technical OPINION PLEASE. Classify my late 50's survivor custom Lincoln

    X2 on the no fish tails thing. They are kind of like crybaby dolls. They do look better when they are laid down horizontally under the bumper than sticking out vertically though.

    Very cool and interesting Ute. I'm with the leave it as it is camp, with the exception of replacing the modern "upgrades" with period correct parts.

    In the '50s, Charlie was a metal man @ "Zumanos Custom Shop" in Tucson, AZ.

    While working there, he performed the chop on this Deuce 5wd:

    Thanx Hemi, Metalshapes didn't go into too much detail as to who Charley is/was...and just because he was a "legend" around there, doesn't mean his local status reached way up here...

    I hate to say this, but that thing would look really cool with a full blown Watson-style scalloped paint job.

    I've seen this thing in person, and it's HUGE. It is bright, large, and in your face. It doesn't need anything done to it to stand out.

    That said, go ahead and change the small Appletons over to the 112 buckets, and add the whitewalls when you wear out this set of tires. But other than those, don't change a thing.

    It's a custom. Customized to exactly what the builder wanted. We shouldn't second guess him and change it up.

    Very interesting car. I really like it.

    But how to classify it, is a more difficult task.

    Personally I would call it a customized/personalized shop truck.

    To me it does not really fit into any of the known categories. If it would fit one, then it would be the mild custom category. But even then all the "logic" modifications like lowering, shaving, etc have not really applied to this Lincoln.
    The only real custom work (the way I see it... I geuss from a traditional point of view) is the addition of the padded top - which looks really well.
    The addition of the pick up bed, even though very nicely done still looks more like a practical modification to me than an esthetic one. Even thought the work on the fins molded to the rest of the body was very nicely done.

    Personally I would not really care for a label to be put on the car. I would enjoy it for what it is, possibly personalize it a little more like you say with the white walls, the Apelleton's (no fish tail tips please) and perhaps a little lower. And if it ever needs a new paint job some shaving...

  11. Somebody mentioned Wide Whites as being over-rated and they certainly can be, but as Gotgas' rendering shows - the WW give the top some balance. If I had a vote and it were my car (I can wish can't I? :)); I would look for some '51 Merc skirts which would continue a straight line from front wheel well to rear bumper and lower it a tad. Orrrrrrr, leave it as it is - it's waaaayyyyy cooooollll!! :D

    The quality is there. I must say tends to grow on you. I like it a little more each time I look at the thread.body seems very straight. Good luck with it.

    The quality kinda (okay, totally)*****s, but it's just an idea. Someone suggested a Nomad tailgate, and I elected to go with hand-made lucite tail lenses in the fins. '57 Eldorado lights would also work.

  17. Since we have decided to change your car for you :D I thought I would jump in with 2¢ worth... :rolleyes:

    I added the tonneau, painted the rims red and added wide whites and the later '51 Merc skirts; then I removed a little bit of the "extra" trim and replaced the door handles with Lincoln*****ons... You could lower it too, but I kind of like this look.
