A friend of mine is sick of his car..a stock 99000 mile 292 auto powered 57 fairlane 500.

He wants to trade for my super solid 48 f1 project if i throw 2000 in on the deal... a lot of the sheetmetal is nos ford and it has most all of the new parts needed to finish it... thus far, the frame, brakes, steeting and suspension are completely rebuilt.

I am torn on what to do....it is a nice car...but the truck is a super clean project that would be worth a lot more when i get it done.

  2. Unless you are married to the truck offer him about 500 less and jump all over it. Solid '57 Fords are way harder to find that workable F1s.

Do you want a truck, or a car?
If a car, do you want a Fairlane?

I'm kinda thinking the car is worth more than your truck as things sit.

I would much rather have the fairlane if it were me. But, I'm more of a car guy than a truck guy.

I'd make the trade before he changes his mind. But, to each his own.

You can't haul gravel in the 57 Fairlane. Tough choice.

He is looking to sale the car for 13000.

At current prices for the parts on and with the truck......they come to close to that figure thought i did get them cheaper as i bought a lot of the parts 10 years ago before the trucks shot up in value.

I remember a real nice, lowered 57 Fairlane around here when I was young. That car is a great start for a mild custom.

even if you do not really want the '57 you could trade it for something that you really want later.

    Trade. Do it now.

  19. Itemize the parts on your truck (at current prices) and compare it to his "asking price".

Rick, i did that and came up with more than his asking price NOT even counting drivetrain and small items (used an lmc truck catalog and ebay sold history). So it looks like i wont be doing myself any $$ favors by making the trade unless it were closer to even up.

It is a nice car, and would be super nice with a repaint, rechrome and some stainless work they are all blemished but not bad........but that money and effort would finish the f1....and the f1would be worth a lot more finished.

I would run as fast I could to make that trade.. 55, 56 and 57's are really getting popular and I think it would be a good investment... Plus it's great looking....

I think it really come's down to if you want another car instead of a truck.
The parts you mentioned may have a cost thats over the price of the car, but for the most part in a sale situation they would be worth less, sometimes much less even in packages.
So my own opinion (which means squat) , no i dont necessarily think you'd be making out financially with the trade +cash at face value, but i do think the 57 could/would have a higher value finished vs the truck even with the additional 2k he'd like to get.
And the 57 is drivable now which counts for something as well.
    Tough call.
I guess you'd have to forget the dollars for a minute and ask yourself if you'd like another car.......

Personally, i'm a truck guy as much as car, but i think id try and make a deal. A post 57 Ford is a pretty damn cool car and not that common anymore .....id love to own that car, and thats coming from a Chevy guy besides.

    Best of luck

I don't know where you get the idea that an F1 truck is worth more than a nice 57 Fairlane. You might be right but I don't think so.
