I'm sure this has come up before on here, but couldn't find anything.

Anyway, I have never been a fan of four doors myself, but I have the first addition to the family on the way. My current vehicles are not newborn friendly, even the 54 having a backseat, it's too loud and rough.

I have found some nice more doors that would be nice family cruisers that I could still make into a mild custom. A wagon would be ideal, but not having any luck with them

    Thanks.

I would do one if I had to. There are many nice ones on here. I usually prefer 2 doors because the proportions look better to me. i think the thing to watch is not to dump alot of money on one expecting to get it back. My parents only had two doors with 4 kids and we did fine that way.

I myself prefer two doors, until I saw a few post on here with the more door fleetlines. The slant back of the fleetline just helps to make the four doors. It definitely changed my perpesctive and I would not hesitate to build a more door.

I wouldnt be worried about loud and rough 2 door. I grew up in the back of a 2 door 55 chevy with a loud 327 and muncie rockcrusher and I turned out just fine(i think). to think of it, thats probably why Im so facinated with hot rods and going fast! If you think its too loud for the new baby, throw some different mufflers on it for a few years to quiet it down a little.

  5. Some wagons are cool, mid-50's Buick 4 door hardtops look better than some of the 2 doors IMO.

Mid 50's buick and olds 4 door hardtops look awesome to me, and I don't have a problem with 4 doors, but 2 doors tend to have better lines. I have 2 kids myself, and putting them in the back of a 2 door isn't a huge hassle. Also, wouldn't it be cheaper to add some sound deadening and a different exhaust than buying and building a different car? Just change to some quiet mufflers and add some cut-offs if you still wanna be loud when the kids aren't with and your done.

I agree with new exhaust and dyna mat, and as mentioned you won't get your $$$ back out of a 4 door as you might a 2 door.

    Also consider;

If your heart isn't into a 4 door, you'll find yourself having a toughr time working on/finishing/enjoying the car.

Back doors are a liability with little hands. You'll always sweat that the kids will get a hand closed in a door and it aint pretty. I recall my parents sticking with 2 doors until us kids were around 10 or so.

Another thing about 4 doors, that damn pillar gets in the way of a bigger feller comfortably cruising with his arm out the window... lol.

Back when there were lots of two doors for cheap, four doors were parts cars. Time rolls on. Anything old is as cool as you make it!
If you build a Chevy from the early '50's you can disable the inside back door handles and keep the rugrats from baling out on the freeway.
And yeah, you won't get your money back, maybe, but is that all rodding is about now? I thought it was about having fun with old cars!

You're going to buy a 4-door car because you have one kid on the way? Are you serious? If we're talking about a 50's car that's ridiculous. You can fit twelve babies in a two-door car from the fifties. I think you're going for some serious overkill there.

Anyway, yeah 4-doors aren't as cool as 2-doors. Wagons are gay too, unless it's a two-door wagon! But then we're back to point A. I digress...

My own observation is this 4 doors are okay if you are given one or get it cheap. I have seen too many first time enthusiasts by a rare, classic, low mileage, INVESTMENT for big money and enjoy it for a short while and then need to sell it for whatever reason and can't get half of what they paid for it. Look at how long a 4 door is on the market before you pl;unk down your money and then ask yourself could I sell this car if I'm in the same situation. I have had over a hundred cars all different type body styles and the Willys coupes and convertables go fast while the 4 doors started growing roots here. A word to the wise should be sufficient. Hope you get yourself a nice ride.

Thank you all for the (mostly) constructive opinions. The dynamat/ different mufflers makes the most sense. I think I'll go that route

Special Ed - My mom drove a three door, plymouth voyager

    young'n'poor - Good to know, I'm 6'4"

Strange Agent - i can only aspire to be as cool as you some day

Don't get butt hurt- you asked for opinions.

Four-door wagons are not cool in the traditonal sense. There aren't a lot of famous traditional four-door wagons, and there's a reason for that.

everybody is always bashing 4 doors ... i guess that I'm always dragging around a large group of people ,,and tired of opening my door , laying my chest on the steering wheel , and getting bumped on the head with a elbow..4 doors are way better for a large crowd ..
I love 4 doors .. but you have to search to find one that looks good ...

    Strange Agent-

Yes, I asked for opinions about a car for my family, and situation. Obviously others find your comments distasteful, besides myself. Yes, your wit is as sharp as a 7th graders, we get the point. Maybe you should move on from this thread, because others are actually seem to be enjoying the discussion.

I will however, address the one actual point of emphasis you attempted to make. You say 4 doors are not traditional? I'm not sure where you get your information and research, but here's a photo from a book I own, and recommend to others to enjoy. Note the the 4 door '56 Chevy in the upper right.
