#1 for me cause I do most of my reading while going #2 and I haven't got the Point, Fart, Click, and Wipe thing down yet.

I've been in publishing for about a dozen years and will never give up print. So I guess that put's me with everyone else who picked #1. But in terms of magazine subscriptions, it's a tough call, mainly because the content is so lacking these days. And that goes for pretty much all of them. In the past year, I've let my subs to TRJ, SR, R&C, etc. lapse. Now I buy single copies off the stand when I see something interesting.

I sit in front of a computer all day at work. I have a laptop, but only check out stuff that I otherwise wouldn't have access to (like a certain message board). I like thumbing through the mags on the couch or outside or in the john or on the bus or any other time I don't feel like straining my eyes on the screen.

  4. #1. For the reasons stated and you can enjoy them anywhere.
I think print mags could do more with online stuff. I don't want the same old stuff every month in print. That's what causes me to grow tired of any one publication and cancel subscriptions.

  5. Print's not DYING....that's BS. It's CHANGING. Don't make the mistake of confusing the two.

We live in a greedy society where "something for my money" means I want to keep it, even if I don't use it.

Tangibility does not come in bytes.

    Number 1.

Quality magazines require the tactile feel between your fingers and the ability to archive and reference for the future. Sometimes, you cannot replace what is a standard if the content is quality and relevent. Those that cannot withstand a new medium were never meant to progress beyond their lifespan of the original trend. I will never stop buying books and of the few magazines I do buy, I have no problem making space for them in my library.

I love computers and digital freedom, but I also still collect vinyl and other 'outdated'/'dead' mediums for both enjoying and keeping.

I run the website for R&C, and a couple others, and it's good to hear some of the feedback. I personally actually enjoy having an actual magazine compared to online, but what i like about online is that the guys at the mag can send me almost unlimited amounts of extra images, stories, event coverage and I can put them all up because there is no space limitations on the web like their is in the magazine.

I would have been one of the first people to shout number one, but I just went to 7-11 and did what I have done for 35 years and bought 2 magazines without looking at them- and then almost crapped when I was told it was almost 15 bucks for 2 magazines I wasn't sure there was ANYTHING in that I wanted to see. I will for the first time start flipping through if these mags that cost 6-8 bucks.

I never use the on-line magazines and have been involved with computers since the early 1980's. I still like my information available in a book or catalog, that you can flip though.

  11. #1 ,without a doubt.I'm a magazineaholic, although i'm more selective about quaility than i used to be.RJ,R&K,Garage,R&C(much improved lately)and Hop UP are the favorites.Hopefully Canadian pricing will improve, now that our dollar is worth more than US$.Some of you complain about Rodders Journal at $12.95US,we get charged $19.95Cdn.Understandable when our dollar was $.60 but not now.Still worth it,but fair price would be better.;)

I read every word each person has posted. Alot of "used to's" posted. Folks might perfer one way but their spending habits are dictating something else.

Here's a perfect example, at 9pm tonight Groucho makes a post on the HAMB regarding a Camero in the lastest issue of Hot Rod I think it is. Someone asks for photos. Just so happens I know the builders, go to their website and post the link to the complete build with hundreds of photos. I don't "need" Hot Rod to forfill my need to read about new builds in the industry. The internet does the job so much better and more complete.

#1 for sure!....................I am truly a print junkie, subscribing to over 20 publications at last count. I've been buying hot rod mags since '58, and never threw any away. The rest, I toss.

I thought when I retired in 2005, that I'd get caught up, and the stacks would decrease. I keep wanting to dig out the real old ones, to re-read, but the mailman comes, the cycle repeats itself, and the piles grow.

Talk abo ut multi-tasking, I usually find myself watching TV, surfing the H.A.M.B, and reading magazines and newspapers simultaneously.

I agree with the comment about apples & oranges. I also resisted the switch from film to digital, and now find myself taking more photos than ever. Still, I eventually have all my favorite pics printed even though they're stored on CD's/DVD's. I guess we all resist change, some more than others. Progress provides us with many choices. It's just great to have the freedom and the luxury to be able to enjoy them all, or as many as we want.

Magazines vs. internet .........................Enjoy them both. I do.

Everything goes full circle. Eventually mag companies will return to their roots. So, to answer your question 1.

Ben reading R&C since it was little. Getting R&C,OSR and Hemmings now.
Now I spend more time online at Hamb and Ford Barn than with print stuff.
It took a few weeks to go thru the old magazines when I started the A V8 Phaeton. Tom

    This is great stuff, y'all...

So, it sounds like the majority of you would still pick up a magazine and expect there to be some sort of online presence to back it up--basically, you'd like the best of both the print world and the online world under the title of your favorite magazine, right?

And why shouldn't you expect the best of both?

Here's another angle on the original question: In our modern information age, where have print magazines failed you?

what is important to me in a magazine is that the writers are both engaged and truly informed about the subject at hand. too many primedia type pubs have left a nasty aftertaste of insulted intelligence in my mouth in the last 10 years, and i hate getting handed a plate full of velveeta and being told to like it, when there is something more authentic and satisfying somewhere nearby, even if it's less accessible, if you catch my drift.

I haven't actually counted, but it seems like about 95% of the respondents to this question have voted for #1. So print ain't dead yet...

Mag's rule! There just is a strong need for more of them to be better quality.

    Two things come to mind..
Uno. I know they pay the bills but ADS
Dos. TECHS (I'm by no means a builder but in some of the magazines I see stuff that is a "tech" and it makes me cringe)

Strange. I think 2 or 3 years back, this topic came up. If I'm not mistaken, opinion on this was much more divided. Some even declared, "print is dead" or soon will be. Dang, I hope they're wrong!

I like both for different reasons.

....but, for most of the reasons already stated, I prefer print.
    After all, it's traditional!
