Hot Rods OPINIONS ON USING A HOOD

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Feb 8, 2023.

  1. I know to some opinions are like the South end of a North bound horse but what is the consensus of leaving the hood off your Hot Rod or Custom? HRP

Kind of like a woman going top less. Not always a good idea.

  5. My thoughts are, what's between the frame rails? If it's a piece of automotive art show it off. If it's just a SBC we've seen enough of them. Run the Hood.

Put a hood on. That way thieves don't know you have an LS motor.

Exactly. Depends on the woman. I mean car.

A 32? Sure. A shoebox? Eh. A 5 window? Or a pickup? Just too many questions to say yes or no. Need more info and even still the answer will be subjective.

    Opinions vary of course.

Hot Rod can go either way, a custom must have a hood. End of story!

Example - '39 -40 Fords need a hood, period. Model A, not always. Shoebox Ford, Tri 5 Chev, always!

If it’s a Flathead…no hood. Show it off, and easier to work on it!

Hot Rods, Roadsters, No hood looks good IMO, 36 and up need hood on, have had both, no hood leads to more engine clean up to keep it shiny.

I do like only hood tops on early cars, but I hate seeing 40's cars without.
I say hoods on, it cleans up the lines

If it's a regular generic sbc or sbf it's nothing special. May as well run a hood and hide your embarrassment of running the cheapest option available.

So, I fall into the "yes" court. I am running a hood top, but no sides on the 36.

I think my T would look cool with a hood on it, but I'd have to make it from scratch since there's no ready made hood to go from T body to 32 shell, and then I couldn't run the cowl bands because they'd be in the way. But I've got pieces to put together a '34 roadster next, and that'll definitely have a hood, at least a top and probably partial sides if not complete sides.

I probably more prefer an early car with a hood than without, even though I'm not running one.

  24. Didn't God also create hoods with the sides removed?

When I built my '39 Chev it came with a one piece fiberglass frontend, which was totally junk. But after buying a pair of original steel fenders, I thought maybe the glass hood could be saved. So I cut it off the frontend, and began repairing it. I decided I might want to run without a hood occasionally, so I used pins underneath to allow me to pull it quickly. I also deleted the hood sides, so when it's on the sides are open still.
I mostly like running with the hood on, but occasionally I do leave it at home, and like having this option sometimes too.

I wonder if you would need a shroud if you ran a hood. (30’s ford 324 olds)

I read an article from a vintage newspaper from the 50's about car clubs, and they mentioned having a rule that running around town without the hood was fine, but if making a road trip it was hoods on.
