Well, either way it seems a waste of federal dollars to even have this in the bill.

By the way, her constituency is half made up of minorities-----Many whom are into our kind of cars (I'm part Mexican, i can talk like this).

Typical..............The kind girl I'd most like to "DO", and at the same time possibly trying to kill what I love most.

Have to agree with ya on that point, but if any of these clunkers got to the dismantler, they would be accessed more easily by the auto enthusist than just sitting in someones back yard

    Great work folks.

I wish our government really cared as much as we did. I hate to say it but I really don't have much faith in the powers that be and will be in a few weeks do anything but cover their own ass and take more $ and power from us.

Sorry, just had to get the demons out.

Messages sent to the Speaker and my state reps. Please keep hitting these people with this message as hard as you can, if we don't stop them now, it could get a lot worse. Tell everyone you know.

This bill (S 3737) is just (add your own modifier) incredible. So if you have a car that you couldn't sell for $500 on Craigslist, but it will run and drive, our government will give you $10,000 for it toward a new car.

    GREAT!

I feel so much better knowing that these idiots are taking care of us.

    Here is the bill:

  11. I agree It seems to me that this is a one time one car deal where you dont get cash you recieve a voucher towards buying a new car. If that is so im not worried. mose who could be enticed to crush have already done so. Prices have fallen reciently. We need to pick our fights. If we do a knee jerk reaction to every rumor. The legislatiors will soon begin to turn a deaf ear to all hobbist concerns.

    It's Senate Bill 3737:

    http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c110:S.3737:

I think the part that has SEMA worried is the disposal clause. I suppose that if the idea is to get gas guzzling engines out of circulation, the cars will be crushed rather than parted. Here's the wording from the above on disposal, so the actual fate of the credited cars hasn't been detertmined exactly. But we do know the fate of the electric cars of the '90s.

    • (f) Disposal of Eligible Old Automobiles-
      • (1) IN GENERAL- A seller who receives an eligible old automobile in exchange for an eligible new automobile under the Program shall deliver such old automobile to an appropriate location for proper destruction and disposal as determined by the Secretary.

Sent mine in and also sent copies to key members of Idaho's Automotive Lobbying Organization. (USRI) They are 800+ members strong. www.usri.org

Sorry Calif. but I don't trust that lady! You should think about her at her next re-election.

  14. I think the title says a lot about what the main purpose is: Sell Fuel Efficient Cars Act of 2008. It looks to me like it's another way to try to bail out the car companies. My guess is the fuel efficiency is very secondary, so the title might better be "Sell Cars Act of 2008". And, getting "old" cars off the road is the very least of the concern.

Maybe this was a backup bailout, and now that the bailouts have passed this won't be pushed very hard.

Whatever it is, I don't see the reason for "car guys" to oppose this, strictly from the "governmental incentives to crush old cars will be a detriment to SEMA and the hobbyist" perspective. I don't buy the "slippery slope" argument.
