Original 60's Stude Gasser found, and a plea for help.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by hudsoncustom, Aug 22, 2006.

  1. My buddy Gup from the "World Famous Swindlers" has purchased this 1940 gasser coupe. He purchased it in California (LA area) from a guy who said his older brother used to race it during the early 70's. The guy said his brother purchased it from an older gentleman who was not aware of the history of the car.

We know that it used to race in the late 60's at Pomona, and at one point it had "Garey High School" lettered on the doors. From what we understand, Garey high was right across the street from Pomona. We know it ran an olds motor at one point, but really know little else.

We've tried contacting Garey High School to see if they could give us some names of old shop teachers, etc. during that time period, but have had no response yet.

The car appears to have had a few different paint schemes over the years. Red, yellow, teal, and most recently, blue with black acetelyne panels.

I though you folks might like to see a few pics and if anyone knows anything about the car, your help would be appreciated. Any old photos of the car around? Anybody here go to Garey High School?

He plans on stuffing a hemi in it, and running it like it is. For those up here in the Pacific Northwest, the Swindlers will have it and the digger at the Arlington Dragstrip Reunion here in a couple of weeks...

I want pics of that thing running at the 'strip again...god that's great motivation for me to get the plymouth going...I love everything about that ugly SOB...can we get detail pics of the front and rear suspension setup? particularly the rear traction bars and the entire front suspension...

  6. Looks like a good solid body. I imagine that when they ran it in the 70s it had a nice fancy colour scheme. So what the hell happened to the paint. Did someone start to strip it down and then leave it ? It really needs to get a sharp 70s metalflake gasser paint job. Race car & show car, just like in the 70s.

  7. I can only hope someone has something like that to trade in on my Ply GADS ! but das ist KOOL!

  8. ...Awesome Stude,..always loved those 39-41's. It deserves to be back out there runnin. Keep us posted.

Great find. I love the aluminum blocked-off grill. Looked pretty tricky to fabricate those panels.

  14. damn your a lucky bastard arent ya ..great find

  15. Yeah it's really neat!

I'll try and get some pics of the underside.

The front does flip forward, it is a ful steel tilt nose, not glass.

  16. I'll try and get some pics shortly. The front is running a (I beleive) 40Ford transverse set up, and the rear is a standard leaf spring.

The ladder bars were home made out of engine turned aluminum.

    456 gears. posi.

  17. Yes apparantly at some point in the last 30 years or so, somebody took some paint stripper to the hood and roof.

It will be run like this for a while for sure. If it ever is repainted, it will be fully restored to its former glory.

  18. So does anybody know anything about this car? Anything?

a very cool car, i think i saw this car on ebay not too long ago? is that where you friend found it, or was he the one trying to sell it?

  21. the front clip grille cover looks very much like a chopped Red White+Blue Stude tudor that ran out there in the early 70's, it was a HR feature car

  22. Now that RULES! Awesome!

Hudson, I'll take some pics to Squeaks (kiwi konnection) here in town. There are a few older guys that use to race that come and hang out every thursday with us. I'll take the pics and see what kinda feed back I get and let you know.

  24. That thing reminds me of "Ramona the Rainmaker".....a Stude coupe that ran in the Gas class at the Twin Cities strip in New Brighton, MN in the late 50's - early 60's.

  25. Thanks, That'd be great. Any info we can find out would be helpful.

I know you said you tryed contacting the school but I dont know that they would have the info you are looking for, did you try the dstrict the school is in? That might be worth a shot and I bet they'd keep better records.

  27. Wow!

So THAT'S the car he picked up!

    I like it!

What kind of motor you going to stuff in it?

It would be cool to do the kind of cosmetic resto on it that I'm treating my '55 to... clean the shit out of it, don't change the character... and put a motor and trans in it that will make it HAUL ASS!!

Nothing worse than a gasser that won't haul ass (at least run mid 11's)

    We look forward to updates!

As far as the high school is concerned... you almost need to have someone go to the high school. Most high school's keep their year books... so I'd imagine you'd find something in one of them.

Also, get on their web site... and send an e-mail to one of their teachers or counselors... or an administrator. Ask if there are any teachers that have been there for 30 years or more... (there usually are) and then send THAT teacher an e-mail.

Ask them if they remember who the auto shop teacher was in the 70's or 60's... and then hunt him down.

The car may have been something a kid built, that was not school sponsored. It also may have been lettered before it became a gasser (doubt it).

    Anyway... very cool...

    Sam.

Damn swindlers find the coolest shit. I don't know anything about but it is cool as shit. Try check on some of the gasser chat rooms.

  29. Yeah Sam, that's the car he picked up.

As for the motivation, it is getting a hemi. Gup doesn't half ass shit. ha ha.

We've spent some time google searching, etc, but nothing has turned up yet. I did send an emaill to the school administrators, but no reply yet. I am thinking it may be a bit too busy this time of year for a reply.

I think Gups also running an ad in the next Gasser Madness mag, and we're hoping someone at the Arlington Reunion here in the next couple weeks will recognize it.

    Thanks...
