I was browsing through my March 1948 issue of MOTOR AGE magazine* ... and stumbled upon this cool old photo: Checkout that "WELDING A Speciality" sign! ... coincidence? ... I think not! * see my "HOT ROD HEAVEN" (Circa 1948) thread
I'd have to say A.S.S. is more than just Jesse James, and I'm sure he'd agree. And it existed before he was involved as well. But nice try.
Before this thread gets out of hand ... Yes ... I'm well aware that Austin Speed Shop was in business way before Jesse got involved ... I'm also aware that Jesse wasn't even born in 1948! The title of this thread (complete with wink smiley) was meant to be taken tongue-in-cheek ... i.e., I only used "A.S.S." in the title to grab your attention.
Hmmm??? I know that some used car dealers and repair shops are commonly referred to as bandits, but at least this guy was open about it!!!. Speaking of "bandits" too, that pic kind of reminds me of a particularly sleazy used car dealer in Hamilton Ontario back in the 1970's called "Fair Shake Jake's Used Car Sales". He specialized mostly in 'less-than-500-dollar clunkers' (with 'easy financing' on the spot!) that he bought as 50 or 100 dollar 'leftovers' from the dealer auctions or repo or impound yards. Next door to his "used car" lot, Jake ran another business called "Fair Shake Jake's Rent-A-Junker" where he rented out the clunkers that didn't sell right away on his used car lot! <LOL> Mart3406 ======================
Nope, no location was given ... but I'm thinking it was in Long Beach California ... or somewhere near the Texas State Capitol Funny you should mention "bandits" ... here's the caption for the pic:
I've often wondered if the ASS Jesse James was related to the "outlaw". Seems like I heard there was no relation??? The outlaw robbed his first Missouri train just outside of my home town at Gads Hill, Missouri. There is a "Jesse James Saloon" at that spot, and little else.
Remember "Perk The Jerk" In San Leandro Ca. Had a billboard right over his used car lot depicting this big fat ugly guy. The city fathers finely made him take it down.
Yes he is a direct decendent.Watch motercycle mania he will tell you that.He is from the Missouri ann line of the family.
Looks like an old Cushman scooter out front. Either sans the rear cowl, or one of the models that came without. My Cushman lore is kinda weak.
