Hey guys 57 Chevy Panel. I know a lot of guys use an aftermarket column (ididit or Chevy van) and that allows you to basically plug and play with the wiiring harness as the column itself has the right full wiring and adapter. What if you are using the original OEM column and a basic flasher relay ? This is what I have but I am going to use a brand new harness as the wiring is all a bit shoddy. What do you do here ...... any links or suggestions ?
Your new wiring harness will have provisions to wire the column harness. Flasher will be in the fuse box. Using an American auto wire harness on your 57 will be a breeze. Bit on the pricy side but complete and the instructions will guide you.
So then basically just route the existing column wires (extend) to the fuse box for maintaining turn signals. Lights under the dash same thing .... Don't think there is much else to these trucks ...obviously brake lights ..... Will be putting in aftermarket AC at some point .... Assuming that will just be 12v switched or constant
Sorry I took as a car. Trucks have more room. Use a Rebel harness and you'll be fine. Otherwise go to American auto wire and download their instructions. All the answers right in front of you. That is if you don't rewire the truck. Your original wire color will match AAW instructions. Rebel colors will be different than original.
Bought this a few months back. http://www.ezwiring.com/store/viewitem.php?productid=4 Just most of the wiring was already a mess ..... and then things like the brake light activation switch will be all different (ls swap). Plus addition of AC. etc Also not sure what "knobs" on truck were for what as most weren't working etc But think really just get the brake lights working and headlights and go from there with regard to "accessories" like AC and radio. Was mainly the column indicator I was cocnerned about - but forgot the turn signal flasher on on the fuse panel ...... so should be just a extension of existing wires as you say.
Identify all the wires on the existing column and match them up with the corresponding kit wires. All the ones on my car were easy and I had the hazard wire leftover. Another thought, now would be the time to swap in that sexy tilt column...
match up the colors. Most aftermarket harnesses use the "new" GM color code for the lights, don't they? In this chart, "Old" means 1957 GM color code. "New" means 1960s-1980s color codes, as used in many universal replacement harnesses. Old----------function----------New pink---------left rear----------yellow purple-------right rear-------dark green light blue----left front--------light blue dark blue----rightfront-------dark blue white------brake switch-------white yellow---power from flasher----purple
