Features ***Original Looking "New" '33-'34 Front Spring? Chrome???***

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by cactus1, Sep 8, 2013.

  1. I tried a search (both here and google) but am not finding what I need. Is anyone producing a reverse eye chrome front spring that has the dog-eared ends like the originals? I found a TCI spring on eBay that looks pretty nice but has tapered ends like a later spring.

Also, is a '28-'31 spring the same dimension as '32-'34? I see ads for 29" and 31" springs. I guess that is all just shackle and perch pin dependant?

32-34 springs used 7/8 eyes...Model A Spring etes are either 11/16 or 3/4" (can't remember at the moment). Model A used 10 leaf front springs, 32-34 used 12. Other than that, they're the same dimensionally.

  3. Thanks for the spring info gwhite. I did not know they had different eye sizes.

Like gwhite said, original Model A are 11/16 shackle bore, 32-34 are 7/8 shackle and aftermarket 28-34 springs are all 3/4". I'm thinking you will have to have one plated, to get the dog eared ends...

Don't get a spring chromed unless the chrome plater knows about preventing Hydrogen embrittlement.

  7. Hmmm, looks I have some experimenting to do. I have those '32-'34 perch pins I got from you Neal. I was hoping to use a reproduction shackle that mimicked the original but if I end up using an aftermarket spring does that mean I need to mix and match shackle parts? ( I used new stuff on my truck including perch pins though I did swap out all the plastic bushings with bronze) so I don't have much experience with the original bits.

    Good advice. Thanks!

32-34 perch pins measure 3/4" ID. If you need to use a Model A spring, you can sleeve the pins with steel pipe and drill/ream/hone to fit a stock A shackle. A perch pins measure 9/16"

    So 32-34 spring eye = 7/8"
    32-34 perch pins = 3/4

    Model A spring eye = 11/16
    Model A perch pins = 9/16

    ...it's confusing :)

Yea, after market shackles are 3/4 x 3/4, so if you get an aftermarket spring with 3/4" eyelets, everything should work with your original perches.

  11. Cool. So does someone sell an original looking shackle? Actually I'm not sure what an original shackle looks like?? Anyone have pics?

I'd prefer something with castle nuts and cotter pins...

  12. Here are Mac's vs originals
I will be using these in the final****embly with castle nuts and cotter pins.

  13. Cool. Those look good huh? Have you tried drilling them yet for the cotter pins? I had trouble with the ones on my Chevy (Speedway I think?)

  14. I like the more pronounced bone shape of the originals,
probably a detail me and a dozen others would notice.
I'm also trying to use the least amount of obvious new parts in this build.
I suppose a person could use one as a template and detail grind the Macs ones, no.

I haven't tried drilling them yet,
but now that you mention it, I remember reading about in
    your build thread.

    Sorry to jack your thread,
    Hope you find a spring.

  15. No hijack at all. I appreciate the input and the bump!

When you say dog eared I****ume you mean rolled and tapered. I've gotten several rolled and tapered front and rear springs from Posie. They have the same look on the ends as a stock 40 rear springs. Looks old timey to me?????

  17. I was actually thinking of how a stock T or A rear spring looks not knowing what a '32-'34 original front spring looked like. Do you have a part number for the front spring of which you speak?

    Thanks!

The possie rolled and tapered is 1001rt.

They don't have the nylon*****ons like so-cal springs. I can take a pic later tonight, just got mine in the mail.

  19. Excellent! Thank you.
