Frank Maratta also ran a speed shop in Hartford, CT. Behind that was his body shop.

Anyone remember Square Speed Shop in Floral Park, New York? I believe the guy running it was Ray Bopp.

  6. New England Speed Equipment had two locations;one on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston and the other on Route 1 in Saugus.I don't recall any car that they ran that had a Pontiac in it.Seems to me there was a Pontiac powered rail running around that time period but I don't recall if it had Hilborn on it.Jack Brady(HAMB name Church Key)might know;he is more well versed on vintage racers than I am.Send him a PM.

Sandy's on Rt 66 just outside Northampton MA. Little office and a couple old buses for storage. Office was still there when I went by a few years ago, everything else gone.

Original shop truck was still around and pictures were here on the forum a few years ago.

    hey,

How about Don's Speed Shop Rt. 1 Edison NJ, Central Jersey Speed & Machine New Brunswick Ave. Fords NJ, and Duffy's Performance out of Red Bank NJ.
There was also one on Rt 27 S. in New Brunswick NJ, but the name escapes me.

Bill "Willy" Strickland ran a speed shop in New London, CT in 1972 because I bought his 1924 T roadster pickup ( see Hot Rod magazine Dec. 1959) that same year. He
later moved to a larger store also in New London called CWS speed shop which stood for "Cee Willy Strickland". Willy passed away at around age 42 after an unexpected brain problem took place. This guy will be missed !
    Thanks,

  12. Red Barn Speed Shop Ludlow Mass. Last I knew still in business, Triangle Auto Sales on Boston Rd in Springfield, sold nothing but musclecars in the early 70s. I remember going by there one night and seeing 7 Plymouth Superbirds & Charger Daytonas lined up. Johnsons Performance Center in Concord NH. The original owned by "Skookie" Johnson. He raced a 55 Chevy with a 389 Pontiac engine. Johnsons is still in business but Skookie is gone. I used to own the engine out of the 55 but the back half of the block was gone from a flywheel explosion. Blew up and went up through the dash & out the windshield & started an electrical fire in the process... You guys are bringing back old memories. I used to have a Ridgerunner tunnel ram back in the day. I'd also love to buy a "Dyno Tuned by Debs" decal if anyone knows where to get one. I remember the sign over the dyno that said they weren't responsible if they blew up your engine.

Yeh. I remember those sales, but never went to one. I think they were on a Fri. or Sat. night. I was always out with my buddies looking for girls in bars. The good old days.

I ust remembered, there was a place called, "Northeast Speed Enterprises", and they sponsored at least one Hemi isuper stock car that I know of, I still have a picture of it in the pits at Lebanon Valley Dragway in 1964. I think "Wild" Bill Rubin was driving it. Also, check out the www.doverdragstrip.com site, there's a whole section in the forums about east coast speed shops from back in the day, and many of the old speed shop owners are active on that site.

Nosurf, what I remember about Conn Dragway is that we'd eat at Friendly's after the races in '68. I was about 15, and it was pretty much the first time I'd eaten at a resturant, my family simply didn't eat out. But we were winning or runner up just about every weekend that year in the heads up super stock show they ran, so we had a few extra bucks, plus we'd have gotten home pretty late for Mom to be cooking dinner for us.

just found a 2 page catalog from a visit to Mrs mac`s speed shop in Bangor Me. 504 valley ave.I think this was the closest speed shop for us, east of Toronto in the late fifties.the cruiser skirts were $25.00 a pair.i do not know if you can read this scan;the old paper is pretty faded.

Pretty sure it was Lou's, unless Harry bought the place. Lou didn't have
an open front counter. It was diner type counter and stools with a pinball
machine there. We had some games on that! When things got busy, old
Lou would say," Ma, go wake up Billy!"

I used to love stopping by Don's, on the Berlin Turnpike, to shoot the breeze and learn a thing or two, or just stare at the motors on stands in the front corner.
