This is part of my "junk collection" ......anybody know anything about "Short's Speed". I was told it was in Connecticut, but the phone exchange looks like Rhode Island. I imagine it's been some years since people gave away cigarette lighters as promos so the place may be long gone.....

  2. I remember Richie's. I used to race my slotcars there too. I think they had a store in Chicopee too.

  4. Hey 35chevy, I was standing next to Don, Friday at the Allentown swap meet when he was introduced to some fella's. I didn't recognize him but patronized the business way back 60's.

Yes Fiberglass Engineering. For some reason I thought it was run by Carl Carpenter.
My record for remembering thing on the hamb has been bad. I bought a Racer Brown cam and kit for my 56 Olds from him in 58 or 59

  7. In the 60's and 70's Eddie at Johnstown High Performance in Johnstown, NY sold speed goodies. Lots of headers, manifolds, and gauges to the guy/kids who made their money in the "glove-cities" leather mills. Shoot, I even got started with a few sppeed goodies for my Chevy II in the early 90's before I skipped town.

Just picked up this post for first time --read all 5 pages and can't belive the 37 kid missed posting Coopers Auto Parts in Bridegport Ct, back in the 60's that was one of the best local spots to get the goodies from. started on east main st then moved to Boston Ave to larger store. Out of bus. in 80's ( I think ) Gone now but still auto parts store in building. They sponsered lot of guys cars that ran CT. Dragway and Dover. Anyone remember or have photo's of cars .I remember looking at a 57 Pontiac wagon in late 80's that was up in north end of BPT. that was a drag car with there name on it.long gone lots of homes built were the land was vacant back then.

Tubular is still around. I'm thinking about having them build a set of fenderwells for my OT car.

i worked for ray after he left square, he had three parts stores in baldwin plainview and hicksville i worked in hicksville (speed & chrome)with ray for 15 years or so. ray was a great guy he passed away about 4 or 5 years ago. his youger son is still running the hicksville store. his older son was crew chief on the in and out burger a/fuel funny car, that a buddy of ours bought abougt 6 years ago. its a shame he was like the unknown hero in drag racing on long island ran blown B/ gas 55 chevys an a/gas blown injected dragster even busted scott shafiroffs ass in pro stock in the 70s with the black magic vega. hope this helps, need to know more just let me know.

I decided to join because I found the reference to Pfeiffer's speed shop when doing an internet search. The other speed shop in Schenectady was Chamberlands. Sherley Muldowney came raced in/from Schenectady and most likely bought her stuff from Pfiffers. I think I have an old catalog buried in my garage but I am looking for one (another) which is why I was searching the web. I have read your posts anonymously in the past. John

My grandparent's neighbor used to own one in Torrington, Connecticut, but I think that was more in the 70's and 80's time frame. I remember going into when I was a kid, which would have been the late 80's and thought it was the greatest thing ever. I'll have to ask my dad what the name of the shop was.

Ron Dollinger and the guys had a great reputation, even had the A/A national record...Grumpy Jenkins sent customers there saying they built the best injected big blocks around, etc. etc. Consider myself lucky to have worked there for a while back in the seventies, and spoke to Tom Hurd and B/D Gary sort of recently...they were still there.

a guy named dennis ran it for as long as I dealt with them ...1982 ...they broke a bolt in the main bearing web of a 350 just doing the boil out and made a mess of a couple of gallery plugs on a 396
in later years , they messed up my my buddys mazda turbo engine rebuild

I switched to steve at bob ingles in 1987 ......much better and more race motors , no garbage truck heads

when doug left elmsford , it seemed to down the tubes

That name sure brings back memories for me. I remember taking the bus from Enfield, CT as a kid to the "x" where Richie's was located. Great hobby shop & speed shop. The store had a really bitchin slot car track that you could "run what ya brung".

    Great memories of simpler times....
