I picked up this original Pontiac tri-power air cleaner but know very little about Pontiacs. Anyone able to tell me what years this unit is correct for? It is for sale, but I know enough to know it is a hard part to find so I am not selling it cheap. Thanks for any help on application. :)

I have the intake and carbs for that.

If I am correct it is 1965 and earlier,...reason the center hole where the carb top fits into the air cleaner is smaller then the 2 end holes,....it is my understanding that 1966 was the only year where the 3 holes are the same size which is the larger size that also is the only year where all 3 carbs are the larger size,...some where around 1958 and earlier all 3 holes would be the smaller size and all 3 carbs would be the smaller size....miller

Me & my brother used to be into tri-powers (65 and later). We would pick them up cheap, clean them up and sell them in just a few days. That was long ago and I don't think I have seen one like this before. At first I thought someone had fabricated it from two separate air cleaners but there is always something out there that no one has seen before.

All full size Pontiac cars used big air cleaners like this one (outside of the 376hp 421 engines in 1965 and 1966.) Even though they worked better than the little individual ones they didn't look as cool as the little chrome ones so lots of them were tossed over the years. As a result the big ones are worth a lot of money today.

I put the little chrome ones on my car as well, but I kept the big air cleaner - it's hanging on the wall out in the garage. :)

    Don,
as was mentioned by stuart, this was originally posted over a year ago. It may well be sold already. Secondly, a PM (private message) to the OP (original poster) would be more effective. Thirdly, you are supposed to do an introduction before you start posting in the regular forum.

    Welcome, Ron.

My '63 389 had a tri-power with an air cleaner just like you show. I did take mine back to my dealer shop for the swap out (at my expense) for a later compe***ion air intake modification setup that included a foam oval around the carb setup and used the hood scoop. The dealer did give me a cash allowance for the old air cleaner. I'll bet these are hard to find today. The modification really did improve the performance too.

One thing I did forget to mention is I used to go to www.pontiactripower.com and it is a chat site. You do have to register but talk about good ideas and information it was there.
