....I went out to dinner with Dizz & Cepe Mays (sp?) Dizz looked like a hard ass punk but was a REALLY nice kid
JT, I can't wait to see you. I have some awesome Miranda stories. I spent a few weekends with him and we developed a "mutual respect." He tripped on me because I was a "grown up" and wilder than he was! HE is part of one of the highlights of my life It's a GREAT story...... ........for anyone interested, JT & I will be on gate duty at "Scary Larry's" upcoming Jalopy Showdown. JT is the cute one and I'm the old, fat one.....but I've got a sense of humor! http://www.jalopyshowdown.com/jalopy001.htm
I used to ride in the late '70s. Anyone remember (or heard of) The Great Outdoors bike shop in Aiea, Hawaii? Used to hang out there all the time. Surfing was the main thing for me growing up in Hawaii, but when you could not go to the beach you could ride. Too old now, but is amazing to watch what they can do nowdays.
Thought I was on Vintage for a minute. Raced from 78-85 NBL and stopped after racing in the Pro class for two years. Just started riding again last year, NBL 40-44 cruiser class.
i didn't want to sound like a star fucker, but every time the haro gang came to town, we'd hang with them for a week or so after (ron wilkerson's younger brother sean, two german interns(?) lars and bernie, dave somebody or other-he was nicknamed the clown prince of freestyle, and i forget the other ones) we would get lars throwing up drunk every night, it was so funny! we crossed paths with the skyway team, which included little scotty peterson, in ocean city new jersey on our way down from new york. both teams had the next day off, so we rode the town and the boardwalk all night. imagine about a dozen kids shreddin' the boardwalk doing wall rides and peg grinds on the handrails and believe it or not having a contest to see who could (and would) bunny hop the handrail, on the other side of the rail was about a 10 foot drop into the sand and it was dark! you couldn't really see what was waiting down there for you. let's just say i tried it, and i made it over the rail... ...my bike didn't. and i used to dress like ceppie mays (shut up! ), it was kind of embarassing when we first met, but i think he thought it was cool to find another "mod" out there.
Sorry for bringing this up again if it was mentioned before, but... It seems like us freestylers were more more into cars back in The Day than our skater brothers. I mean, look through an old copy of Freestylin' and you'll see alot of pros in ads with their bikes AND cars. Sure, it was the Eighties and the cars were Porsches, Sciroccos, BMWs, etc., but does anyone know if any of the old pros are still into cars? Like us?
AHAHAHA........AWESOME. NO WORRIES, I USED BE HUGE ON FLIP UP LIFES A BEACH HATS....HAD LIKE, 10 OF EM. CEPPIE RULED MY WORLD BACK THEN... DAMN THIS THREAD IS MAKING ME THINK GOOD THOUGHTS...IM GONNA HAVE TO PULL OFF MY FRONT PEG AND DO A MIAMI HOPPER TODAY.
I rode alot and raced a little before getting my drivers licence. My claim to fame is my best buddy growing up got hooked the first time he rode my stripped down Stingray...he had $$ and connections and a couple years later he was in the bike buisness!! He started HYPER. Had Gregg Grubb riding for him and everything. I still have the very FIRST HYPER prototype he gave me. Brett
Cool thread! A friend and my brother and I used to ride back in the 80's. He had a GT and I had Diamond Back with GT/Dyno gear on it. We had a professionally built 8x8 quarter pipe in the driveway that we rode all the time. it was next to a highway so we always had people stop on the shoulder and watch. The local newspaper even stopped by,took some pics of my buddy gettin' 4' of air above the lip. It was in the paper the following week. I'll have to find some the ol' pics and scan them. We used to go to the Wooden Wheels shows in Newark NJ. I remember Rick Moliterno siging my Haro jersey and letting us ride their vert ramp after the show. Damn this brings back memories..
this is no joke, i remember when this was first getting on its way in orange county. plastic number plates didn't exist...they'd tape a paper dinner plate to your handle bars and wrote a number on it with a magic marker. also, over the counter protection pads (gooseneck, handle bar,and top frame bar) didn't exist. each track would tape foam around certain area's of your bike with electrical tape. anyone remember that shit ????
Seeing as I am in work I haven't had time to read through this whole thread....but I would give ANYTHING to have my old Haro Sport back. One of these days I'll get around to building a clone.
...and whatever happened to Rockville BMX in rockville, md? i used to ride near there with a couple guys from freestylin' magazine and li'l spike jonze (yes, the actor/director/jackass show tag along guy) would skate downtown washington d.c. with us... now look at what they've become and look at stoopid ol' me. i can direct music videos too, y'know!
ah yes...just like any good session, talk has turned to the days gone by.... haha... would love to have that hot pink 87 pro performer back...or my 91 master, or my first year Bully. (where is RL now?) from 1996 on, we have had a RAD release party every year on april 4. this year my friend brad couldnt host one cuz he was moving...but i just my first home, and have a kickass backyard...so sometime this summer i plan to have on at my place, borrow the projector from work and we'll view it outdoor movie style. that said, happy (late) 20th anniversary everyone.
My best friend is Randy Jenkins, who rode for Hutch for years, and a few others, till he broke his back on a transition. He lurks on here sometimes. He still has all his old team shirts and bikes. Gay ass old pink Hutch tornado shirts!
Dirty2 (Danny Burford) was the over 30 or 35 Cruiser National ABA Champion back around 87-88 time. Still has the #1 Plate and plaque and 6 foot tall trophy from the Grands in OKC to prove it. I used to train under Steve Veltman in Dallas. I remember practicing hole shots in his drive way and pulling him around the block with him holding his brakes down. Lots of good time and memories. I ended up top 10 in the nation I think when I was 10 expert and was Gold Cup Champion too. Seen lot of country and mets lots of cool poeple. Still got a 20" I will never get rid off and still have my little Free Agent with titanium ESP Forks.
I rode the piss out of bikes back in the day. Was a flat track racer when the BMXers' came in to being. My nephew races BMX and rides for or has riden for Redline. The last time I watched him he had the factory outfit and was fast as hell. I do like watching the stunt riders.

I try to stay out of O/T posts, but just the other day my father emailed me a picture. It was me on a 16" Mongoose, hitting a dirt jump, wearing checkerboard Vans. I remember tearing it up everyday from 1982-1988. Rode my bike all over Citrus Heights CA. Bikes and boards made me into the fine citizen I am today.
